Bally 5500 CC issue

Repairing a Bally 5500.

Takes bills & plays.  Pseudo coin button works.

Led on Opto is lit,  coin mech switch is up.

Getting power to CC,  no lights, nothing.  Tried known working CC.

Any suggestions?

Coin optic was making a ticking noise when the machine was brought to me.  I removed the board,  cleaned the eyes and the prism.

When I removed the original CC,  the harness disintegrated.

I have spliced it onto the end of an IGT CC harness,  but disconnected red jumper.

Wires appear to be in the correct position & B,Y,P wires all showing voltage.


I tried  putting a paper in to wedge open CC rake.

Coins go to hopper & led on the optic board flash as the coins pass.  No credits added though.

Maybe bad coin optic?   Shouldn’t it add credits with CC rake jammed open?

Is the insert coin lit up? Make sure bulbs are not burned out.

It is not lit up.

Bulb is fine.

Reseat your door harness connection at the backplane. Try a clear.

I’ve cleared a few times.

Will try to re-reseat door harness.

Insert coin should be flashing. Not sure where to go next. Maybe someone will chime in. Scott Bennett is very good with the Bally 5500. There is other members here as well that can diagnose.

Why did you remove the red jumper? What was your reasoning?

I believe the red jumper on the Comparitor harness was from IGT harness. Bally doesn't use the jumper?

I spliced the CC end of an IGT harness onto the wires for
 The original Bally harness.

The Bally harness did not have a red jumper, just black, yellow, purple.

I’m thinking maybe the Optic board is bad-


If it does not cause an error when coin is dropped & rake is jammed open, seems like it’s not operating normally?

It does work with the small pseudo button though.

Not yet.

Optic board will arrive tomorrow.

I tried a different power supply,  just in case.  No change.

Did you clean the mirror behind the optic board?

I did.  When a coin drops,  the optic eye flickers.

It seems to be sensing coins, but CC is not enabled or working for some reason.

Going to try new optic,  but other than that,  I’m pretty stumped.

Most of the dead optics I have are dead because the microprocessor chip that was used for logic became defective - to make matters worse the working chips are locked and cannot be read to make duplicates.

It does work with the small pseudo button though.

The Pseudo button has nothing to do with the optics.
It sends a Service Credit back to the MPU for a slot technician.
Even if you pulled the optics off the circuit board with a pair of pliers, the Pseudo button would still work.
However, it ONLY works when the door is opened.
If the door is closed, then the optics on the board must work to "see" the coins.
The CC is there to compare coins and direct them where to go.
It doesn't send credit signals back to the MPU...the optic board has that job.
If the coin is good, it's directed to fall into the optics.
f the coin is bad, it's directed to fall back into the coin tray.
If you somehow were able to reach inside the machine while the door was closed, and pressed the Pseudo button, the machine would error out.
Get your Insert coin to light up first, and you'll be back in business.
I hope the new coin-in board solves your problem.
If not, then it's the door sensors.
Lastly it's either the MPU or the backplane or pinched wiring.

Machine is fully operational again.
