Ram Fatal Fault on Alpha 2
« on: August 31, 2021, 09:38:43 AM »
Hi guys

So I have some Bally Alpha 2 that went just show "NVRam Driver Mount Failed" randomly one morning, was working fine before that. Everytime it happens I have to change battery, change NVRam, clear and reinstall the game. Risking losing all settings and meters.

What might have causes this initially? Do I have to change NVRam everytime or clearing should solve the issue?

If anyone know where to purchase more DDR3 NVRam for Alpha 2?

Also anyone know how to set up Michael Jackson game on Alpha 2?

Whenever you change batteries, the power that keeps the configuration is lost, so you need to clear and setup to redo the configuration information.  The only way around that is to change the batteries while power is applied.  Most of the time it works.  You have to pull the mpu out of the cabinet, then plug a power cable to the mpu and when it powers on, you can replace the batteries without loosing the information, works 90% of the time, for some reason sometimes the nvram gets zapped anyway.

The memory type is just standard DDR3 sodimm.  Depending on mpu version determines if you need 2x8 ranked or 1x8 ranked drams for the 4gb modules.

Michael jackson (22/32 version) does not require anything different in particular than setting a standard 22/22 game.

Hi Rick,

Thank you again for coming to rescue. So I did try that "hot switch" on the old bluebirds, work great. But for the Alpha two I thought about doing the same thing you says but realized the CPU got to be push in to stick the backplane (where the batteries are) so in a sense you can't access to the battery when the power is on. Unless I'm wrong...

How do you usually tells which DDR3 you would need for certain machines?

Personal question, you seem to know a lot about these slots, do you happen to have a business for slot related? I would love to get a contact if you do.

The nvram batteries are inside the mpu enclosure.  If you pull the mpu out, you will see the 2 renata batteries that need to be changed.  It is worth noting that these mpu's eat through these batteries.  If you keep the machines off most of the time, you will be changing batteries at least once a year.

If your mpu has audio jacks in the front, you have a 2.0 mpu.  If it doesn't have audio jacks, you have a 2.1 or a 2.4.  If you have a 2.0 mpu, and you want to put 8GB of ram in the machine, you will need 2rx8 dimms.  If you have 2.1 or 2.4 either 2rx8 or 1rx8 will work.

This is a 2rx8 memory module

notice there are less IC's as the memory is more dense.

I do not have a slot business, I'm just a home hobbyist.

Hi Rick!

Thank you so much for the link to the nvram super in need!! Have you ever tried to upgrade the 2.0 cpus to run newer game? From what i heard it only the matter of getting better nvram and maybe graphic card?

The reason is that I'm trying to run Kooza Cirque on a machine that used to run Firelink. It installed through the process but won't load after. :(

I have Kooza on mine. 2.1 MPU, 8g ram, and probably most important is the Video card on that one. i have a K2000 card.It also needs a video adapter for the topper video.
