Howdy all. I'm new to this website and new to owning a Slot machine of any kind. I've purchased two bally machine in the last 2 weeks. What the placard says on my first is 742a-m186a. Not sure that it's correct but that's stamp on it. I have a book that says this should be a money honey single coin 3 reel quarters.That's not how it's set up. It's bars and 7 for the jackpot. It has some issues like not paying on most winning lines. A few bulbs are burned out and the replacement bulbs don't fit. The winner paid mechanism has a broken wire terminal.  I'll try to solder the wire directly to the tiny bit that comes out of it. It spins freely and the coin hopper works well. I have a wire diagram so I'll study that and see if I have an issue with that. The wipers appear to making contact and aligned. Any other idea for making this pay would be appreciated. And how do I post a picture on here?

To add a photo just click "Attachments and other options" A menu will drop down where you can add your photo by clicking "Choose File." Make sure your photos are 1mb or smaller, but not too small please! If the photo is too large: you can e mail it to yourself and most phones will give you the option to reduce the size. bally made a lot of different versions of the 742A, with one of the differences being the reel tape symbols. 

if you game only has 7's, bars, maybe melons and blanks, it'd be one of the "jackpot only" style games that pays less frequently (statistically), but pays more for any win.

the 742a-m186a is probably the serial number ... the bottom number on the plate below the handle.  The top number on the plate is the model number, and sometimes it matches the game :-)

if you're having trouble posting pics due to size, you can email highest possible resolution images to slotpics@cdyn.com and I'll downsize and post them for ya.  Entire front of the game, serial number plate, codes stamped into the slotted metal reel index discs and the m-645-xxx number on payout counter disc under the hopper helps identify a game.  There may also be a model number written in black sharpie on various units or on the reel wiper boards.

any 742A schematic will be mostly correct except the reel wiper wiring and the payout disc.  That is specific to the type of machine and rarely may be unique to a specific model (e.g. a 742A-130A "tropicana special" model made for the tropicana casino had unique reel wiper wiring afaik).

below is a pic of the game.  It's an IGT mashup (the reel wiper boards came from an 809-9ZT but it's a wide reel mech).  Someone slapped a serial plate from a 742A-186 on it and IGT likely couldn't change that since they needed to maintain a paper trail.

next step is to check the wire colors on the payout counter traces and see if they are the same on reel 1 wiper board, then verify zero ohms/continuity from gray wire (90) on the reel 3 wire board to reel 1 and the payout counter when you have a winner on the reels.

voltmeter testing is an option also.  One probe on orange wire 70 on any handy 50V coil (coin diverter on the front door), and other probe attached to points along the circuit from wire 90 thru the reels to the payout counter and finally the gray/yellow wire (93) on the payout relay.  You should see 50V everywhere on the path, but it probably disappeared someplace or the payout relay would power and turn on the hopper.

one thing to check before anything that takes effort ... is the payout counter reset?

The payout step up unit might have some oil or grime between the contacts and the silver metal strips.

It’s possible to set up winning combinations to test the machine.
Do this by pulling the handle to start the machine.
On the left side the clock fan will spin.
Stop the clock fan prematurely allowing the reels to be set with the right hand to a winning combination.
Hold the reels in place then release the clock fan.
The machine will finish the cycle and a payout should follow.

This will help determine what pays are working and if they’re consistent.
