1090-18 runaway hopper
« on: October 25, 2023, 07:28:55 AM »
Trying desperately to solve this before my Halloween party Saturday I have cleaned switches checked contacts and looked over everything I know to but I can't solve this, every payout the hopper runs till safety shutoff. I'm open to all suggestions!

1090 machines are electrically stepped.

if you play one coin and and after a payout:

1] have the wipers on the payout counter unit moved, or are the still at reset (around 6:00 on the disc)?

2] does the win meter do anything?

since the payout counter, hopper and coin unit are in different places, there's plug connections between them.

my docs say the schematic, payout counter and reel wiper wiring is the same as the 1090-1 (see https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/).  Your glass, reel tapes and slotted metal index discs are different ... assuming you have all those pieces from the Barbary Coast casino.

the circuit you care about is about 16 on the schematic ... wire 60-1 down to the payout counter step-up coil.

if the win meter isn't working, check the payout relay switch and plug connections first since the hopper pulse switches (operated by the roller pivot arm the coin lifts as it exits the hopper) are redundant, so unlikely both need clean/adjust ... tho it's possible if the mounting bracket got loose it shifted so neither switch is closing.

if the win meter is working, then most likely thing is a poor wiper->rivet connection on the coin unit.  Also check for burn marks on the plug connection to the top compartment and verify the payout counter step-up coil isn't bad.

if ya get bored, please email highest possible resolution pictures to slotpics@cdyn.com or stick them on a cloud drive/file sharing site someplace and I'll add them to the above site.  See the https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/1114/pics folder for example of what's nice to have pictures of.

Payout step up unit not functioning properly. Possibly stuck in payout mode as in not stepping up.
Or the payout relay top left rear of the hopper not functioning properly.
Payout relay tells the hopper motor to run.
Contacts with blue white or solid green to the best of my recollection controls the hopper motor.

The meter counts up with every quarter I will take a look at that relay on the back of the hopper.

Typical schematic for motor operation.
Circled in red are the contact switches involving timer and hopper motor operation.
White / Blue wires are the contact set on the payout relay that need to be investigated.
I believe there  2nd and 3 set on the right side of the stack.

And possibly the delay relay.
Wolf has a better understanding about the delay relay than I.
As I’ve only had one or two encounters with the delay relay.

his delay/safety circuit is working ... the problem is the payout counter is not stepping up.

since the win meter is incrementing (not clear if it's incrementing for every coin tho), then the only thing left is marked in red below.

various plug connections aren't shown on the schematic.

if you play two or three coins and the X2 or X3 unit is stepping (the pinball score reel-like things in the top compartment), then the only thing left is red/green wire 14-3 from the top compartment to the payout counter step-up coil or the step-up coil itself.

if the X2 or X3 units aren't stepping, then black/green wire 84 isn't working to the coin unit, or the coin unit wipers have a problem.

a quick test is connect one end of a jumper wire to 84 on the win meter and touch the other end briefly to yellow wire 30 on the coin switch and see if the payout counter and/or the X2/X3 unit steps - depending on the wiper position on the coin unit.

you can also attach the jumper to 14-3 on the coin unit and touch wire 30.  If the payout counter doesn't step up, it's the 14-3 wire to the step-up coil, the coil itself or a mechanical issue like the coil stop fell off.

The meter steps up with every coin,  the coin unit stepper advances with each coin up to 3 but the pinball style reels don't budge.

The meter steps up with every coin,  the coin unit stepper advances with each coin up to 3 but the pinball style reels don't budge.

the coin unit stepper advances when coins are deposited.

zero or one of the pinball score reels move during payout, depending on how many coins were played.

get one coin play working first, since that doesn't use any pinball reels.

does the jumpering info above make sense?  You use a long jumper and clip one end on the wire on the coin unit and shove the insert back into the top compartment, then touch the other end of the jumper to yellow wire 30 on the coin switch.

if you want to sanity check the hopper out of the game and have an ohmeter, look at a 1090 schematic and connect probes to wires 70 and 14-3 on the hopper plug.  You should get some ohms reading below 100 ohms.  Note the schematic plug diagram is drawn looking into the female socket, so you have to mirror the layout when looking at the plug pins.
