S9000 Upper Unit Removal
« on: April 07, 2018, 05:37:30 PM »
I am looking to acquire a S9000 (Stars and Bars) with the LCD screen on top. Is it difficult to remove the upper box for transport? I am trying to avoid renting a truck when I go pick it up! :-)

It depends if the mica goes over into the topbox and it is not separate, otherwise it's just a few screws and some cables you must unplug.

All the ones I have had come apart with 8 Philips screws, 2 nuts and wire connectors. Take a larger Philips and a set of nut drivers. One of the screws is under the back plug housing. You will need to loosen the 2 nuts to get to the one screw. Easy to do. Good Luck.

Thsnks! I think I may go for it - I am going to be near the seller in a couple weeks, so I thought I would save myself a couple hundred dollars shipping - Just trying to wedge this thing into the back seat of our car is the worry...I am pretty sure it will be easy in two pieces.

These things are heavy, so be careful with your car's seats.  The cabinet can easily perforate leather/vinyl/cloth surface of the seats.  Also the slot handle needs to be carefully managed so it doesn't break or damage anything or itself.  If I were trying to stuff it in the back of a car, I would remove as much of the inside of the cabinet as easily possible to lessen the weight (Power supplies, MPU, validator can and transport.  I would also remove bottom door which tends to be heavy, but that involves removing cabling and tie wraps for various lights and switches.

Yeah, I agree with Rick.  Your seats will get destroyed.  Sliding it into the bed of a truck or an SUV is the way to go if possible.  I know some guys that have transported slots in a car, but the war scars were catastrophic.

I may need to rethink....I was going to use one of those heavy moving blankets on the seat...i figured the machine, with the top removed, couldn't weigh more than 200 pounds...I figured about 250 pounds total. The S plus machines I have were not fun to move, but they didn't come apart. They are similar overall size, I thought...havent measured yet though.I thought the bottom part and top part could occupy both passenger seats in the rear.

233 Lbs according to this document.  A pickup would be easier and safer.  Check the dimensions in this doc to make sure it would even fit through your back doors if you do decide to try it.

You can probably rent a trailer to pull behind your car, or rent a pickup truck, to transport the machine and you'd still come out ahead compared to paying for a shipper. Advantage of doing it this way would be the machine wouldn't have to be taken apart and put back together, plus you could transport it standing up instead of laying it down on its side. It's not exactly safe to have a 250 pound metal box sitting behind you, if there was a crash that thing would try to press you up against the dash.

You convinced me - I may try to rent a one-way SUV coming back. I looked on Expedia, and a one day/one way rental for a midsize SUV is only 30 dollars total! Glad you guys convinced me to look - no idea they were so cheap right now. There must be a glut of cars down in FL right now!
