Early S+ Repair Help
« on: January 31, 2019, 07:05:28 PM »
I am doing a favor for a friend of a friend and am following the rule that "no good deed goes unpunished". I normally work solely on WMS dotmations and 400 machines, but have a limited knowledge of S2000's.  I'm working on a early S+, that does nothing when the power is turned on.  The power supply harness is fine and does not show any burn out at all.  The MPU board looks exquisite and has no acid damage whatsoever.  Tested the battery and definitely needs to be replaced. None of the lights turn on, so no power is getting to the machine. I have cleaned the contacts and still nothing. Fuses need new holders ,but I have tested with all fuses connected and still nothing.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Check the fuses above the power supply....there's 3 of them.
top fuse =6 amps
middle fuse =8 amps
bottom fuse = 6 amps
Use "quick blow" fuses only!

Bottom fuse holder is highly suspect seeing that someone foolishly is trying to hold in the spring-loaded fuse with a piece of duck tape.  :24:

Also, In the picture below, cover up the chip's glass with a piece of tape.
Light getting into that exposed eye of the chip corrupts the programming inside.

Pull the main, black, power cord out and check for voltage to the two flat blades.
While it is out use a Ohm meter and check each blade terminal to the other side of the line filter and see if you have continuity.
I just had that problem and some previous coin short had burned open a line inside the metal line filter can.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

plug in the machine, measure the 115 vac at the service outlet,  it should be there as soon as the machine is plugged in.

as BADBAUD said, the power enters the machine via the power cord,  goes through the silver filter, then each side of the AC is applied to TB4 and TB5, ,the ac travels from there to the service outlet and to the on/off switch, from the switch the ac travels to TB1 & 2  VIA  the 115vac fuse   AND TB3,   these terminal blocks supply the ac voltage to the transformer, the output of the transformer is supplied to the motherboard to power the logic board.

This is an intermediate S+ machine, a bit smaller than the normal cabinet. If your friend would sell the machine I would be interested, I collect the intermediate models. It seems there is almost never anything wrong with this machines, I would gues it could be a fuse problem, or a bad line filter. Only AC current is deliverd to the MPU, and the transformer wouldn't be bad.

Ok, I got power to the machine and as expected got the error 12.  Replaced the battery and got error 61. Opened the door and held down the test switch (little white button on the MPU hosing unit) for 3-4 seconds. The 61 briefly disappears and reappears. It will not go to 61.1. Is this a clear and reset BV situation. I’ve always been told to not clear an S+ unless it is the last measure. Please Help?  This machine has a little different configuration than normal size S+’s.

you are in the 61 loop,  you could try and take out the cmos chip, ground it out and reinstall, some say this might work, I just clear the machine,  not much to reset, could walk you through it on the phone.

I have an older game that would love to move on.It has a PE Plus platform - not the older Bally 3 card version. Is it considered intermediate?

I am having the exact same problem with the same machine and just posted about it earlier today.  Would "Jim" extend that same offer of phone help to me as well? Thanks

Jim,

I received the clear and set chips.  I clear the machine no problem, but when I use the set eprom here what happens.  When I put the set chip in the mpu and power on the machine, I am able to set the denomination and power off the machine. Exchange the set chip with the game chip.  When I turn the machine back on I get the 61, but when I press the reset button it does not go to 61.1. The reels spin and it shows zero in the coins played box. If I put money in the bill validator, it gives me a error of 3300 and 20. see pics.  Any suggestions?

3300 is a hopper empty code.  Are there at least two rolls of quarters in the hopper?

All of those settings are dependent of the SP chip in the game.  see the flip cards in the "how to Guide"  of the S+ section, it will show you all the numbers in the windows and explain them, the input test starts with the numbers 5_0 or 5_1 or 5_2,  these determine if the machine will put up credits on the display or allow the player to select how the wins are handled. when in this menu, each time you advance to the next number it will show that particular setting, you will get to 8_ 0 or 8_1,  this setting determines the bills to hopper payout (depending on your SP chip). the next number 9_0 or 9_1 shows the bill unit enable, 0.its not, 1 it is.

using the flip cards and the menus will allow you to test every switch, lamp, hopper, display, reel alignment etc. takes the uncertainty out of troubleshooting the machine. it either does what the cards say or it doesn't if it doesn't then its broke.

Hope this helps

Jim
