Noobie needs help with IGT S+ 5 Times Pay 2cm machine
« on: March 09, 2019, 02:02:54 PM »
Hello everyone. I'm new to this and need help with my 1996 IGT S+  5 Times Pay machine. It has the 10 Mhz board with a Sp731 game chip and SS6251 reel chip in it. I would like to put in a higher % reel chip SS7812 and wonder if I can just swap them out and be good to go,or are there more steps to it than that? I also made a video on Youtube about the noise my reels make and wonder if any of you could help me figure that out as well. My Youtube name is tuffy11000. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Yes you can swap out that 85% ss for a much higher % chip, won't have to do anything else.

Your reel noise could be loose strips. Make sure they are on there nice a night.  If you remove the strips, does the noise go away?  if it doesn't go away, your stepper motors are just noisy then.  You should be able to buy a set of reels for relatively little money (around $30 for a set)  As far as them being "crooked" that just means the plastic is bent, kind of hard to straighten that out.  Your best bet is to just get a good spare set of reels (you should anyway, while you can still get them relatively easily and inexpensively).

I also made a video on Youtube about the noise my reels make and wonder if any of you could help me figure that out as well.
I've attached a link to your video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlALBl0vwBk
I sounds to me like the noise occurs equally on all three reels?  Check the nuts under the LED display in the door to see if they are loose.  I can't quite tell from the video but it could be like a similar noise I had?  I found the whole assembly display loose enough to tilt back onto the reels so that they rubbed.  I could not really see the contact through the glass.

Thank you for all your tips. I don’t think the reels are rubbing on the glass but I will check for loose screws on door assembly anyway.  I will try the zip tie technique and tape on the center hub to see if that does anything. I think after I zip tie them up and before I put the reel strips back on, I’ll run it again to see if it makes a lot of noise. If it does then maybe the step motors are bad? What’s the best way to reattach the reel  strips so nothing (like tape)will show? Or will the glue that’s on the strip still be good enough to reuse?

Another option is to crank the volume on the S+ - you will never hear the reels.  :duh:
In a casino you have a ton of ambient noise as well. Have you considered having children  :hissyfit:

Stick a piece of scotch tape BEHIND the strips? Lol

For reattaching the reel strips I use Scotch Double sided permanent tape. Works great. Even though it says permanent you can still remove if needed.

I don’t think the reels are rubbing on the glass but I will check for loose screws on door assembly anyway.
Just to clarify.. They weren't rubbing on the glass.  I was referring to the cream colored LED display housing that was rubbing.  Nuts below the housing mount it securely to the door.  If those loosen the housing can tilt back toward the reels and it's hard to see with the door closed.

Thanks to all who replied to my problem! I did the piece of black tape on center of reel hub trick and that seems to have made it so much quieter to where I think it sounds normal. It was only the 3rd reel that I did it to as that's the one that seemed to be the problem. I did apply a drop of gun oil to the stepper motor on each side of the shaft but i don't think that did anything. Time will tell if it comes back, but for now I'm really happy. Thanks again all! This is a great site!
