HELP! I THINK this is a s model IGT WIld cherry.... 41 error
« on: September 21, 2019, 03:18:42 PM »
I attached a pic, first of all can someone tell me what model this is? I of course have parts for the s-plus but NOT this. No matter what I do I get the 41 error on bootup, swapped reels, even put them in a s-plus machine...reels are fine. Im leaning towards a board problem.Either does someone have a board OR can someone point me to the correct transistor I should be looking at that controls the first reel?
thanks,
Greg

I thought the s model had the board on the left side of the cabinet & had no place for a bill acceptor & used the same board as the s-plus..... are you sure?
anyone have this board? I replaced a few bad caps to no avail...still getting the 41 error....OR can anyone point me in the right direction as to what components on the board control the reels? With no schematics im toast.

S slots all had that board located in the rear behind hopper.  In 1989, when the S-Plus was introduced, they put the board on the left side of the cabinet, to left of hopper.  Later in production, some time in 1993, the S Pluses have the board in back, behind the hopper, like the model S.

Yes, I am sure you have a model S there.

Boards are hard to come by, but they are out there.

A real easy way to tell the difference between an S and an S+ is that on the S, as shown in the pictures in this thread, there are wire harnesses that must be unplugged to remove the MPU (processor) board from the machine.  On an S+, the board and tray is simply removed by lifting up on it and pulling it out of the machine.  The S+ board plugs into the fixed motherboard of the machine, and there are no wire harnesses that need to be removed to take it out.

Based on the pictures in this thread, it appears that the machine may have been subjected to some water damage.  With the power off, I'd suggest unplugging the wire harnesses and removing the MPU board from the machine to see if there's some obvious damage to the board.

First of all, Thank You MVCO for the confirmation.I did remove the cpu many times, its all ok & the battery believe it or not was still good! I could tell this was in a shed or some crappy environment so tested a lot of components on the board, even found a few open caps & replaced, but still the same thing....41.Im mostly a pinball & arcade guy but love slots & have been repairing them for a few decades now, but still far from an expert & have ZERO schematics for ANY IGT machine, so I have no idea whats controls the reels. I tested all the transistors as I figure they are part of the equation but they all test the same, so I figure its a chip at this point. In my experience the cold usually dries out caps, but usually the chips make it. I cant say its NEVER happened with a machine I have worked on from the cold, but usually the chips survive. At this point I think I need a new cpu OR someone to give me more insight on where to look & what to test on this cpu.
thanks for all the help, guys.

I found some schematics for the s-plus, & see the reel detect goes through a 4049 chip & some resistors. Going to see if I trace the wires from the reel to the board & work my way back from there then into the board. Im hoping to find similar components on this board although the layout is slightly different.

Hello,

It's funny, this week I just had a IGT S Wild Cherry with also a 41 error !

To solve it, I just had to unplug the molex connector of the reel 2 and put electronic contact cleaner, and the machine is gone...

I know I was lucky, but have you tried ?

Sometimes we do not think about the simplest solutions.

Wires are all good, im SURE its a board problem. Changed the 4049 chip with no luck, still the 41 reel error.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as what to look at/replace on this board?
thanks in advance,
Greg

How about a picture of the board, no more guessing.

On a S+ there are 5 resistors on the corner of the board. These control the reel motors.
3 are typically have signs of burn on them and the other 2 are pristine.
That is because the S+ could handle 5 reels but that was rarely seen except out of Australia.
On occasion one resistor becomes too damaged to work.

I have never worked on a S board but I can't imagine that the reel control mech is much different and I would look for those resistors.

if the reels are good, the wiring good, maybe the machine is not seeing the door closure signal,  does the display go blank for a few seconds after you close the door,  "S" models didn't have door optics, it had a cherry switch mounted over on the left hand side, it has three positions, pushed in, (door closed) at rest position (door open) pulled out (door closed) but the door is actually open, the machine thinks it is closed.

maybe this is not working, thus it will never clear the 41 code??

It's not that simple. See attached. There are stepper motor drivers that are controlled by serial data via opto isolators and open collector drivers.
You would need a scope and the schematics to troubleshoot the S slot board.
That is what I use to  fix those boards on my official IGT S slot tester at my shop.
You could send the board to me and get it fixed, just a suggestion.

Badbaud I think at this point thats where im at. I have raped a s-plus board & replaced a few chips shotgunning, and I did find the schematics, but no matter what I try I cant get past the 41 error. Can I ask you to send me a message & we can work this out where I can send it to you.
thanks,
Greg
