IGT S Plus Money Storm help please
« on: May 04, 2020, 08:39:11 PM »
Hello all, I am working on a IGT S Plus Money Storm for my neighbor. He said it was working and it set for a few months then when he turned it back on it would not boot. So I brought it over to my house to work on it. When I first looked at it the motherboard was toast from mouse pee and all. So I ordered a replacement motherboard. I installed it and got the game playing and paying out coins. Everything seemed to work good. I had a few small things to finish on it like bulbs ect. Well it set for about 3 months because of me getting very busy. Know that I am home alot right now I went to finish it up yesterday. I plugged it in and turned it on. It booted as it should. I put a quarter in and hit spin. It played like it should but the first time I hit 3 bars it did not pay out. It came up with a 3300 code. Well I have to say the LEDs seem to be flakey for some reason. I am not sure if they where like this before it did not pay out or not. If I turn the machine on it will start booting up it will spin the reels then a 1 comes up in coins played then in a few seconds it will come up with 1100 in the winner paid then it changes to 3300 then 3322. When I put it in test LED mode when they should all be 8's the numbers switch around. Not all of them changing just some segments going in and out. That's what I mean by flaky. Ok back to hopper not paying out coins. I went to the hopper test. I am pretty sure it is the hopper test. It had 3 in coins played meter and 2 in the winner paid meter. The hopper did not run. If I push the brake in manually I can turn the hopper wheel and make coins come out. When I shut the door or try the hopper test the hopper lock does not pull in and there is no noise or hum at all from the hopper. Should there be 120 volts at all times on the two bottom connector were the hopper plugs into? That is the two that goes to the hopper motor.  Mine has 120 volts there as soon as I turn the game on. Does anyone know what I should look at for the flaky LED's and the hopper not operating? Thanks

I took a couple of videos of what it is doing. The first one is of the machine booting up. The 1 comes up in the coins played window then the reels spin like it should since my last play was 1 quarter. You can hear  that the hopper does not try to do anything. No humming no nothing. See the 1100 come up in the winner paid window then changes to 3300 then 3322. The one in the coins played window changes to a 3.

The second video is of it in LED test mode I think.

In the pic is this what it should look like in hopper test?

I made up a 2 prong plug from a short orange extension cord by cutting off the extra rubber on one side and making a dip in it. The bottom to connectors of the hopper plug right into it. I hooked it up and plugged it in and the hopper itself worked great. Does someone know how the actual hopper power works. If I put a meter on the two bottom female hopper plugs I get 120 volts as soon as I turn the machine on with the hopper not in it. I would think if there is 120 volts there the hopper would start turning as soon as I turned the machine on. Or does the power operate different if the hopper is installed? Thanks

well here is how it works---  there is a SSR   (solid state relay)  mounted to the side of the plug mount, ( usually black)  that relay gets the ac hot from the three prong plug that comes out of the side of the power supply module, the hot side goes to one pin on the output ,black/red wire, the other output  pin white and black goes to the hopper plug pin 11, the neutral side of the 115 vac goes directly to the hopper pin  12,  the machine ground goes to hopper pin 9.

there are three other pins on the relay, pos 1 has a grey/violet wire, pos 2 has a grey/red wire and the ground has a green wire. when it is time for the hopper to turn on one of the positions is send HI a positive voltage from the cpu board, this energizes the relay, that closes the contacts on the output and puts the hot ac from the black/red wire to the white/black wire which will turn on the hopper motor.

when the count is complete, the cpu removes the HI signal from the relay, it de-energizes and removes the hot ac from the motor, thereby stopping the motor,

Jim

Jim Thanks for the reply, so is it right for me to be getting 120 volts from the two bottom female hopper plug holes without the hopper installed? As soon as I turn the machine on and it stays at 120 volts through bootup even when it should call on the hopper. There is 120 volts there at all times. Shouldn't this voltage only be there when the CPU calls for it. Maybe there is something else there I am not understanding.

Seeing the video, it seems it is wanting to pay out. It maybe had a winning hit with 1 coin bet. I noticed the reels spin then stop left to right instead of right to left as normal start up reel spin. As far as 1100 that is not a code. 3300 is code for empty hopper. 3322 another crazy one, not a code. Maybe bad hopper. try the one from your other machine.
Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

Well I figured out my problem. Sure would have not thought this. I thought I would post an update incase someone else has this problem. Well I was messing around in the machine about to pull my hair out. I just barely touched the wires to the cabinet optic and one fell off. Then I touched the other wire with two fingers and it fell off. I remembered having a good extra cabinet optic from a S2000 machine I have that had a bad optic on the door so I saved the good cabinet optic. I put the good cabinet optic in and everything works perfect now. The LED's do not flicker anymore or change numbers randomly. The hopper pays out as it should. The optic was working good enough for it to recognize when door was open or closed but I guess the loose wires were putting interference on the line somehow making the displays to flicker. Also interrupting the hopper signal somehow. The thing is everything worked on the machine except the displays flickering a little until I hit the 3 bars and then no pay out. I had read that if everything else was working on the machine but it would not payout it had to be a wiring connection from J10. Well that is not true this can be caused by flaky wiring on the optics. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Yeah....because the door optics were grounding out, they were putting erratic logic signals into the system.
I'm surprised you got away with using s2000 door optics because they have different colored wires - I wasn't sure if they're of the same voltages as an S+.
Not only that, the door optics differ as the door frame optic is an emitter optic whereas the door cabinet optic is a receiver optic.

If the door optics were grounded out how did they work to recognize door was open and closed in game mode and test mode? I was thinking more like not putting a solid voltage through the wire. Like if one strand of the wire was still connected and the rest arcing across the other strands putting out erratic signals. From everything I read the S plus and S2000 optics are the exact same optics just different part numbers. The original optic cabinet wires in the S plus are the same colors red and white as the ones I had left over from my S2000 red and white. I just looked at my S2000 and the wires in it are the same colors as the wires in my friends S plus I am working on red and white. Same connector. I did replace a door cabinet  receiver optic with a door cabinet receiver optic.

Oh...they would still sporadically work - causing one to think they work fine, but somehow [3322] & [1100] incorrect numbering ( Those are NOT correct codes) got mixed up into the system.
The only way that could happen is a partial shorting in the wiring thereby causing erratic logic signals and shooting out incorrect code numbering.
That's what I think anyways....lol

One time I screwed up inserting a leg on a chip in a socket and the bell kept going off without a jackpot.
Drove me nuts  :banghead: :hissyfit: ....game played fine but that bell?!?!? I pulled the bell wires out  :stirthepot: ...haha
