Displays Netplex Link Down error from Hell!
« on: April 15, 2021, 12:37:21 PM »
I know this has been covered numerous times, but I've got one that is kicking my butt.

The game is a 21 Gambler Barcrest S2000 with Enhanced Board, MEI and Backlit Reels.

I programmed and played it for a few months then it just quit on me. I get the Displays Netplex Link Down error then No Display with Horn.

I've disconnected every device inside of the machine to include the Bonus Game. Tried different Displays, VFDs, Printers, Bill Validators and MPUs and Daughter Cards.

No Ballasts are hooked up, disconnected the Netplex Distro Board and Reels. And everything else I could think of.

I'm at a loss. Even tried several Power Supplies.

On the MPU I get the top 2 Green, next 2 are off, next 2 (5 & 6) are Amber, 7 is Green, Red is off.

Does it sound like the MPU isn't booting?

Only thing left to change is the Backplane.

Any suggestions?

Whenever I work with trying to get a machine up and working, I disconnect the topbox speakers....at least the right side speaker because it always seems like when I do this, the left speaker is very low and I don't get the blaring horn all the time.
Of course, I don't have the coin tray speaker hooked up either because that's the LAST thing I put back on after troubleshooting.
Do you have more than one S2000 cabinet to help you troubleshoot with that has everything working?
That makes it somewhat easier to swap problem parts with known good cabinet.

Sometimes it's just a battery issue or that little chip on the backplane board that causes problems too but yeah...I'd go ahead and  switch out that backplane.
Too bad it's not the easiest job.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I've been pulling known good parts out of other machines with no changes in the behavior of the problem child.

I've disabled the entire Bonus Game, BV, Printer, Audio and everything else.

The problem started after I changed out the Button Deck with the correct one with the lighted Barcrest Emblem on the front. Which doesnt make any sense, as it's not a Netplex device.

I've looked for shorted wires and switches, checked I/O cards, disconnected the light source for the Barcrest Emblem and the JCM Smart Bezel.

I can even disconnect the 7 Segment Display and VFD, but still get the horn.

It's almost like the game refused to boot. Don't know if the Board LEDS are an indicator of what it's doing or not.

I guess my only option is to replace the Backplane and go from there.

I'll post back once I do some additional troubleshooting.
