S2000 Slow to Come to Life
« on: January 19, 2022, 07:49:25 AM »
My S2000 was unplugged for a few weeks while doing some remodeling.  After plugging it back in, it took a couple days to come back to life.  Initially only the interior light would come on…no other signs of life.  After a couple days it functioned normally but the top box light remained off.  Eventually that too came on, but dimmer than normal.

My (uneducated) guess is a bad power supply as my primary issue, and a bad ballast for the upper box.  Is there an easy way to confirm?

Thanks!

Swapping parts is the easy way, but if you don't have any to swap out (but you should, at least the power supply while you can still get them cheap and easy), then moving the ballast from the bottom to the top and removing power supply to look for bulging caps.

Sounds like the power supply to me too.  The S2000 has electronic DC ballasts for the florescent lights which operate off of the +25VDC power supply output.  That could be why they are acting up too.  I'd replace the power supply first and go from there.

Thanks for the help.  I've ordered a new power supply & power distribution board (well...not exactly new, but supposedly in good working condition).

Am I correct in my understanding that the power supply is behind the reels, & the component in the lower cabinet which the power cord plugs into is a power distribution board?  If yes, is there anything I need to be aware of when removing the reels to access the power supply?  Or is it pretty straightforward?

Yes, you are correct.  The power supply is behind the reels.  Don't grab them by the basket, pull them by the base.  Backlit reel baskets are pretty fragile and tend to break easy, so be careful if you have them.  If they're non-backlit you don't have much to worry about.

Also take photos before you unplug anything that has wires plugged into it so you can have a reference what it looked like before and you don't end up  :burningresistor:
