472 Reel disks - size

I'm restoring an early 742A - SN 2335, so it was relatively early in  the run.  I'm testing out the electrical connections on the wiper boards.  If I move the wiper back a few notches I can get the hopper to turn, but this is farther back than the reel disk allows.  Was there a time when the reel disk was larger than it was in later machines?  I'm not sure the reel bundle belongs to the machine.

Do you mean a 742A? I think so, as never seen an EM model lower than the 609s. Anyway, the tell mech is usually (not always, but usually) marked somewhere as to the model machine it belongs in (usually handwritten on the base of reel mech assembly or right below reels on the front of assembly). Most of the time, you will find the corresponding model number in other parts of the machine as well (inside door, bottom cabinet floor, etc).

Jeff, your reel wipers may be misadjusted.  You can see how they should line up by reading here perhaps...http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=19336.0
If you push them all the way back, they should line up with the last set of buttons on your reel boards.
I think all the reel discs were the same size (might be wrong), but there are 20 cut discs, 22 cut, and 25 cut discs I believe.  You can count how many cuts in the discs and then count how many reel symbols on your strips to see it they are the same...?
Also, when you index the largest pay, it should(not always) be the deepest cut on your disc.
