coin comparator s+
« on: December 09, 2015, 05:23:33 PM »
I have a machine not taken coins, So I figured it was the comparator and I had a bunch of them and wanted to test them on another working machine to see which ones were good  and bad. So I tried them all and none worked and when I put the original working one back in it didn't work??   When I press the credit button on the optic board it works and gives credits but when I try putting a coin through the comparator it just goes through and gives no credits?
Is there a way to test a comparator and optics?   Thanks

You did install the sample coin into each comparator when you were testing it in the machine, right?

If the sample coin is being rejected to the tray, the sensitivity adjustment might be the issue.  If coins are being accepted to the hopper but are not giving you credit (essentially, the machine is "eating" any inserted coins), your comparitor is fine -- it's the coin-in optics that are malfunctioning.

unfortunately the only way to test a cc is either in the machine or out of the machine. in the machine, you have no way of knowing if the LED is coming on,(indicating power to the the unit and that it is being enabled) because the door is closed and latched. if you have a bill acceptor then you have a way to test the cc with the door closed and observe the operation. remove the coin comp. assembly from the door ( remove the cc from it 4 clips, remove the two screws that hold the assembly to the bracket and unplug) now drop the belly glass door down, now plug the assembly into the connector  reinstall the cc into the 4 clips, turn on the power, close the door, and now you should be able to see if the unit is on, and enabled, and what happens when you place a coin into the cc.  make sure all the cc units you are testing have GREY wires going back to the coil on the back side of the cc, this indicates they are for 24vac use.  Also check the cable that plugs into the cc unit, this cable gets bumped, twisted, etc.  the wires tend to fray and break a lot, make sure they are all good. there is a way to test the optics  if all the cc work.

Hope this helps

Jim

Do you have one of the early style S+ machines? If so they don't open. The later machines with the knurled pull pin next to the door latch do.

Check the coin optics, they may be bad.

Could be wrong size coin guide for the optics. If it has $1 coin guide and you use quarters you will have the issue you mentioned about random coin recognition.  Clean both sender and reciever optics with a damp cloth first and while you have it apart you will see which guide you have.

That's a classic symptom of having the wrong size guide (called the "encoder") in your coin-in optics.  It's likely a large coin ($1) encoder, and you need the $0.25 encoder so it will guide the coins that are accepted through the comparator past the three coin-in optics correctly.  The plastic encoder is located within the coin-in optics assembly, below the coin comparator.
