On a slant top machine there will be extra security switches around the cabinet where the door and side panels join the top. These can be bypassed if you want. There is a need for all the security switches in the casino, but for home use they can be a major source of nuisance errors.

Maybe you old DBV-145 will work good enough for you to be able to insert $1 bills and put credits on the machine. Remember, always insert the bill the same way on a DBV-145. Did you see the earlier post by sixcardmark about how to lift up the award (payoff) glass?

Also, here's a photo showing how that red handle should be positioned for normal bv operation.

....... I was able to one time get it to take a 1 but sent the change to the coin payout box and not to credit. This was before the 5-0 try so maybe the -#'s for my chip are not accurate per these instructions....

Might want to double-check the bill acceptor pay mode setting in TEST menu step 8 to see how it is set. This setting has some overlapping interaction with the credit mode step 5 setting. The How-To guide for SP1271 says to set "5-0" and "8-1". Did you try this? Also, if your machine has a "CASH/CREDIT" pushbutton it can affect this, depending on how you have TEST menu step 5 set. Try pressing this CREDIT button once and see how it affects things. If it makes a difference then try setting TEST menu steps 5-0 and 8-1, see if they now work as the SP1271 How-To Guide says.

I can see the red lights in the slot, but spits back every bill. I was able to one time get it to take a 1 but sent the change to the coin payout box and not to credit.

The fact that it is trying to accept a bill is an indication that your settings are correct (ignore the fact that it issued change from the hopper rather than posting credits -- that can be changed later), and that your validator works.

As was posted earlier, unless you have a cache of really old bills, your DBV-145 is only going to accept $1 bills.  Please ensure that you're only using $1 bills in good condition for the purpose of testing and troubleshooting.

If the machine is currently attempting to accept bills, and if the bezel (the orange "Insert Bills $5 to $100 Face Up") light isn't lighting up, I'd be checking the connections for that light.  While the bezel light is useful in diagnosing the working state of the validator, it is not necessary for proper operation.  Again, you said that the machine is attempting to accept a bill and is spitting it out (rejecting it).  That's a much different scenario than a machine not attempting to take a bill at all.
