trying to help a guy over the phone . his door optics are bypassed, but incorrectly, not thru a cherry switch. he got a coin error 21, and cant reset it because he cant open and  close the door optic circuit. is the another way to clear a tilt error?

What about pulling the cmos ram chip, sitting it on aluminum foil or the metal shelf in the machine for a short time, maybe that would corrupt or zero the ram. Then reinstall it and hope the machine resets things or reloads data from the motherboard eeprom? But that's just a guess.

Bypassing the door optics is not a good idea and is more trouble that it's worth in my opinion. It's not brain surgery to fix door optic problems. It's better in the long run to just get the door optics working. Otherwise you have hassles like this.

+Vb, which powers the door optic transmitter is generated from a 6.3 VAC tap on the main transformer, not the tray transformer.
A half wave bridge and a large capacitor, plus a Tranzorb for over voltage protection, is all that is in the circuit on the MPU board.
Follow the 6.3VAC lines from the main transformer to the backplane board's power connector.
Make sure 6.3VAC is present, I have encountered a couple of games where the 6.3VAC winding on the main transformer has opened
but it is usually a bad pin or connector on the backplane board power connector.
You can check if the door transmit LED circuit is working by unplugging the optic and plugging in a LED in series with a 390 Ohm 1/2W resistor.
If the +Vb is working then you will see the LED visibly flash.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Here is a discussion about bypassing the door optics on an S+ and some different ways to do it that will allow you to switch the door to Open or Closed mode. One of these might be an improvement to what your customer has now.
