CPU board is locked up. All LEDS are on accept RED LED continually Flashes.
How this started.
I received this machine as a puzzle. I confirmed the power supply, reels, top LCD display and game software in another cabinet. Everything worked. After reassembling everything into its cabinet at which point i was receiving a display netplex error. I soon found the four green wire communication plug to be loose for the VFD display. Next I received a RAM error so I pulled out the clear chip and started the procedure to reset the machine. I got all the way through the clear procedure to the point the red LED (coins in) display lit a "o" on the front door display and just when the reels went to cycle the game quit. I smelled the lovely smell of electronics burning and turned the machine off. I now get the above LED condition as described in the beginning. I can also smell the burnt smell at U722 on the cpu board (24 pin chip) 6116. I am assuming this is a 6116 RAM? Any other insight as to what caused this? and what does the red LED flashing indicate?
Since I wrote the above I removed the RAM chip i thought could be bad but it tested ok. I did however find that pins !8 & 19 of the RAM socket are shorted to ground. I do not have a schematic for this board and it appears it's a multilayer PCB as i could no see any traces running to these pins on either side of the board. So i do not know if these pins should test to ground or not.
A little more investigating and I have found U700 which is near the ram to have a burnt hole in it. I will remove it and see if it at least unlocks the board. This chip is in the Super Stepper Controller section.
Ok, Removal of the chip allowed the board to start booting. The chip appears to be a surface mount 74HC174. Can anyone tell me what portion of the game that this chip is controlling so that i can repair it without any further problems. I see it runs to a transistor section and whatever it turns on and off is probably shorted.
Ok, The board now boots up minus the first reel spinning. I see 5 identical circuits here and i am assuming for five reels. This is a three reel game so i can probably move one of the unused chips over however there's still the problem of what cooked it. I had this reel in another game for testing and it was fine.
