IGT S+ Motherboard Replacement
« on: October 28, 2024, 08:22:55 AM »
Hi all,

Newbie here. I recently inherited an IGT S+ (I think) Double Wild Cherry slot machine. The machine boots up, reels adjust, BV activates - but getting an error 12. Reading through the forums it looks like this is low battery issue. Inspection of the MPU and Motherboard confirms that was the issue. The battery disintegrated and left a trail damage on both boards (pictures will be posted following this post.) The MPU had less damage and may be salvageable. I'm affraid the Motherboard may be too far gone. So, before I go searching for replacement boards - I want to be sure what I'm looking for. Below is what I have been able to figure out so far.

1. MPU: I think it's an S+, 10mhz with the following markings (75505704 Rev A 4693 PCA / MB84460 Rev B 12/93)
   - From what i've read, I want to stay with a 10mhz board - do I need to find one with the exact revisions/markings?
2. Motherboard/Backplane: Markings as follows (75903903 Rev A 4893 PCA)
  - Same question - will any replacement S+ board work, or do I have to match the specific numbers?
3. I may also need to replace the Metal Board Tray (damaged due to the force to get the board off the corroded screw/ferrule), transformer, and the metal ferrule itself (may be able to find something that works.)

Thanks in advance for any assistance as I find my way through this exciting hobby! Also, what is the recommended source to purchase these parts (Site WTB/Particular Vendor)? The prices on eBay look very high so I'm thinking that is not the best place to look.

Thanks!
Tom

Looking at the small motherboard - I would say its done for.....but not withstanding in your first post you said that it powered up... yada yada.
Before you start spending money I would suggest you make up a baking soda paste (baking soda & water) and gently use a toothbrush to clean it up.

The MPU didn't look bad at all. I would solder in a battery holder - I like the quarter sized button batteries (lithium) as they take no room. Other people will put in a dual AA holder. Others go for the factory style batteries.

With respect to parts - unless you have a favorite slot vendor - you may want to visit the folks on our home page - I suggest you call as their web pages are usually out of date. None of these people have paid for banner ads they are given them as they have been helpful to our NLG members over the years. Ebay parts are sometimes hit or miss.

Thanks for the quick reply Jay.

I reinstalled the motherboard after my post (I actually attempted a gentle baking soda cleaning this weekend) and now get nothing on the lcd screens. So, i think if it wasn't toast before, it is now. I'll start calling around looking for a replacement.

So, before I purchase a replacement Motherboard/Backplane - can someone confirm that any S+ 75903903 will work (regardless of revision)?

Also - if anyone has one available to sell, please reach out.

Appreciate the assistance!

That should be okay.  :cool_thumb_up:
Save that ferrule.
That goes between the two long white 64-pin header connectors.

Look at the numbers  :sherlock: on this motherboard...front and backside.
Don't worry about the scratched "LV453".
That was somebody in a Las Vegas casino's idea of marking the floor location of a board.  :duh:

Morning all,

Thanks for all of the replies with advice. I was able to source another motherboard from another NLG member and that seems to have fixed the issue. The LEDs returned, was able to clear the error 12 (by replacing the battery on the MPU), and now I have the all too familiar 61 error.

I have attempted everything that was suggested on all of the posts I could find. I can get to the 61-1, but it returns to 61 - which leads me to believe I'm stuck in the loop. I replaced both of the door optics with ones on a working machine, did the tape alignment, checked with my phone camera for the infrared, and inspected the belly glass for another sensor (I don't see one on my machine), etc.

So, it looks like I may need to clear the RAM at this point. Any additional suggestions are welcome. If anyone has a clear and set chip for sale, i'm in the market. I found a pair on eBay for ~$22.00 w/free shipping - but have no idea if that will work or is even a fair price.

Game Prom: SP872
Reel Prom: SS3410

Thanks!

Tom

Yeah...you're have the "[61] Loop"...that's about the only time you'll ever need a Clear chip.
$22 bucks for both a Clear & SET015 chip is better than a fair price.
Of course, you'll need the Set chip to re-enable the bill acceptor.

I'm not exactly sure if you're doing the [61-1] procedure correctly?
You need to close the door and then turn the jackpot reset key.
After a few seconds, the reels will spin from the rightmost reel to the left.

If your door optics are not working ("seeing" each other), you cannot complete this procedure.
I'm going to say that they're working though, because you've noticed the "61-1" turning into a "61" after turning the key?

Thanks Stayout

Yes I did follow the procedure as you outlined. Received the clear and set chip and followed the instructions posted on this site. Cleared the 61 & 65 and everything seemed to work ok at first. However, it started acting a bit erradic - doing the following:

1. Automatically spins once 3 quarters inserted. 1 and 2 coins still require button/pull.
2. Periodically, after play, coins played goes blank and reels all spin 1-3 times at normal speed. returns to insert coin.
3. Sometimes pays on non-winning results. Otherwise, it pays correctly with a winning result.

I did check the following based on what I could find on this site:
- No error code displayed
- No bent/broken pins on the chips and/or MPU
- Reels spin freely when off. stiff when on.
- The power supply on the motherboard appears ok (no burn marks)
- The reel resistors on the MPU also seem ok.

The whole reason for replacing the motherboard was due to the battery corroding it beyond repair. My fear is that the MPU may be damaged as well as a result. There are areas with corrosion around the battery and transformer. I'm not technical enough to test anything on the board to verify.

Any assistance is welcomed!

Tom

Pays on non winning symbols often are caused by mis aligned reel strips.
1. Check the numbers on the reel strips and ensure they match the PSR - some themes have 2 or 3 different sets of reel strips depending on the chip number. Ie the three or 5 line pay glass use different strips than the single Line version.
2. Reel order - many themes have 3x the same strip but occasionally there are different strips for different reels.
3. On the reel basket there is a nub and a matching knotch on the strip and make sure they are aligned.

Hope this helps

Thanks. Things have changed shortly after my post. The reels went into the spin, and an error 42 came up. The reels also have a humming sound louder than my other machine. Since it appears more than likely due to the MPU being damaged from the battery corrosion, I swapped it with the one in my other, working machine.

Once swapped, the errror code is gone, the wheels no longer hum and spin as they should, and it pays correctly now. However, the machine still auto spins once the 3rd coin is inserted! My questions:

1. Can the auto spin due to a setting or bad game/reel chip?
2. Does it make sense to have someone who knows what they are doing look at and repair the MPU?
3. If not, where is the best source to purchase another MPU? eBay seems to be around $200 or so, which seems high to me for this machine. But what do I know.

Thanks again!

1. Yes the auto-spin is a setting.
Do you have the PSR for your game chip.
PSR=Program Summary Report and it details all the game chip options.
PAR=Pay table and Reel and it details everything about your theme.

2. KLAR can repair your MPU

3. For spare parts flea bay can be a crap shoot, deals can be had, sometimes deals are too good to be true and you get baited and bitten. The vendors on our home page have been gifted their banner - ad. Banner Ads are not for sale and NLG receives no revenue from these vendors. They are the good ones. With that said their web pages are often a pity so it’s always best to call and see if they have what you seek as well as letting them know your a NLG member.

Thanks Jay!

I was not familiar with the PSR for the game. I was able to find it on the site and look it over. It appears I need to get to <0> 39 on test/settings, but that number doesn't come up when I cycle through the pages. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.

Anyway, I found a working board from a member so hopefully i'll have both machines up and running soon.

I just reviewed the PSR for your SP872.
In order to change anything, there must not be any credits on the machine....clear any credits off first.
Once that's done, open the door and press the little white test button.
Your 1st photo of your machine shows it up left of the power switch.
You should have a zero in the Coins Played window on the reel glass display.
Now, turn the jackpot reset key about 17 times until you see 39 0-1 in the Winner Paid window.
The [39] is for, as you said, the "Max Bet Autospin"
Press the Spin button to change it from a "1" to a "0", to turn that option off.
Once done, simply close the door to save the settings and exit the options.

The "auto spin" may also be due to incorrect wiring on one of the switches -- I would suspect the Bet Max button could be wired incorrectly.
