NEED HELP TROUBLE SHOOTING BALLY 5500 PRO SLOT-no codes
« on: May 17, 2015, 02:31:10 PM »
HI

I picked up this non working bally 5500 for $50.00 bucks .Was told by last owner, that he thinks its a easy fix, maybe a battery. Thought for the price, its  worth taking a chance on. When I flip the power switch the only thing that lites reel glass lite & red small light next to hopper. There is no codes in front windows. There is also a small faint thumping sound. My first thought was the 3.6 battery was dead, its not it test at 3.6 volt. Any other ideals for me to trouble shoot.

The first thing I would check is the power supply, they are notorious for going bad.

For starters, check every connector stating with the mpu board. Make sure there isn't any bent pins. Connectors might not have been plugged in all the way especially in the mother board. Press each one.  Also pull the hopper out an look around for any coins that might be wedged in the back. Use a small mirror. Also, pull out each fuse and check with a meter.
Report back.

That thrumming sound is usually caused by a defective power supply.

The audio section works with a higher DC voltage and is not dependent on a MPU resetting then enabling the electronics to provide a display and a game.

Because the power supply is bad the MPU never gets the stable voltage it needs to operate to game mode but the audio section gets a pulsing of on / off voltage as the power supply tries to fire up and that pulsing DC is passed along to the speaker as a thrumming.

Or it could be something like someone put a IC in backwards and is preventing the 5 volt logic power from coming up due to an excessive load on the power supply's 5 volts.

Everything is connected inside the power supply, voltage wise, all output voltages have the same common ground so if the 5 volts is loaded down the rest of the output voltages suffer also. Another cause of thrumming.
