BALLY PRO SERIES HOPPER CONTROL BOARDS - FRYING CAPS?
« on: September 25, 2015, 09:01:46 AM »
I have machines that have been sitting for 20 years - these are V5500 pokers but the hoppers are basically BALLY PRO HOPPERS.  When I game up a game the control boards SMOKE -  2 caps fry.  I thought it might be the motor/gear box going bad from sitting - so hooked up a 24v dc jumper from a machine and powered the motor on several that I thought were suspect - the motors functioned - forward/reverse.  I will update the CAPS that fry later. The caps are not electrolytic.

The board is a AS-3356-171A  the caps that are frying are C14 C15 C22  (also need to know what these caps are) or better still a wire diagram?

  The motor/gear box is E119-530  707-953397 24V DC

Check to make sure that the proper fuses are in place.

I see the board has 5V and 24V. Just because there not a fuse on the board, doesnt mean there is not a fuse in the cabinet that covers that voltage. There has to be power supplied to the board from off the board and that circuit should be fused. I could be wrong, but that is my basic knowledge. All machines I have worked on has some type of protection on their circuits. If not ... I have learned a new part of the rapidly progressing technology.

With C22 burnt, replace the cap and U5. If it is shorted it will fry the cap.

the bally pro use circuit breakers - they don't trip - so it is the hopper board / motor.   i replace the motor and control board and problem goes away - so the issue is with the motor/gearbox or the control board -  since i can run the hopper without any problem - looks to be the control board - SO - what would cause the components mentioned to FRY?

Thanks ... so I am learning too. But in learning, I found out a long time ago, there are repair logs here on NLG. That is where I got the info on the C22 and U5 replacement. There is more info there and I am sure you can find what your looking for there if it has been an issue in the past. Either way, there is great help here and it will come.
