I was thinking more of the MB. A loose plug or bent pin. I was looking at a picture of a 960 stepper MB trying to see where hopper plug is.
Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

yes, the motherboard could have a board trace that has burned open.

I don't know for sure.  I'll post tomorrow when I get the backplane out.

I pulled and went over the backplane today.  A few minor frostys on a couple of the plugs but nothing obvious.  I went ahead and reflowed all the connectors just to be safe.  This pretty much just leaves me the MPU board as a probably cause doesn't it?

The MPU board is screened 7551050 followed by a stamped "0 Rev D".  Correct me if I'm wrong but if I replace the board it is my understanding that the 75510500 can (and should be) replaced with a later version such as the 75510504 which also fixes the sound issues.

Well I feel slightly stupider than usual.  I had convinced myself I was overcomplicating things so I thought I would regroup.  Come to find out the hopper motor that runs at less than half an amp on the bench had a huge initial startup current (over 7 amps).  That momentary startup current exceeds the overcurrent protection limits of the A3952SW drive IC and caused it to shut down.

I ran the motor for a couple of minutes on the bench.  The startup current went way down as the motor warmed up, so I put it back in the game.  Low and behold it was working.

Now where to find a motor for a S-2000 hopper?  Can you get just the motor?  Motor and gearbox maybe?  I don’t think it would be practical to ship an entire hopper for the sake of just a motor.

Is there anything binding in the hopper that causes the motor to have to work harder? Maybe something is rubbing against the coin wheel? Or maybe the grease in the motor gearbox is drying out and getting thicker? If you release the motor brake can you turn the hopper coin wheel easily by hand? On older machines it isn't unheard of to drill a small hole in the top of the gearbox and add some oil or lightweight lube to mix with the old grease in there and make it easier for the motor.
