Flash vs EPROM version of Bill Validator Software
« on: October 19, 2023, 05:02:35 AM »
I’m guessing there is NO way to determine what version of the validation software is running on your S+ WBA Validator WITHOUT having the JCM software and diagnostic cable….??

So, do you just determine what bill acceptor you have by sight or sticker (mine’s WBA-12-SS) and order the LAST version of the EPROM ROM chip which will work with what you have?

I guess the Flash ROM and EPROM chips are interchangeable as long as they are programmed with the correct software— or do the Flash ROMs not come out of the board.

Thnx.

Does the following sticker on the validator chip mean anything to anyone…?
Or is it simply a price “$10”

Thnx.

That sticker refers to the latest update at the time that EPROM was burned. That is old firmware on that chip  due to the fact the new $10 was a while ago. The new $5 would be the newest update.  V2.?? You can get the newest updated chip from NLG member RB, Ron Ball. Send him a PM

Thanx!

Just so I’m sorted in my head…

May seem like a simple question….

Can you PLEASE confirm:

The “New 10s” sticker likely indicates the latest firmware was installed soon before/after the new US $10 dollar bill came out — THAT WOULD BE THE YEAR 2000…… yes?

MAIN QUESTION

So it likely no note printed AFTER the year 2000 would work in my CURRENT validator…. Yes?

That would correspond with my validator tests while in “test mode.”
It will NOT pass any note after taking it in.
I’ve  only tried post 2000 notes…. I’ll have to see if the bank has any ‘90s notes.

Thnx

Yes.  That is correct.  You can replace that chip with an updated chip so you can use the new  bills.

When testing a validator with unknown firmware I use the good old fashioned $1 bill.  It hasn't changed in decades and all validator firmware will support them.

I thought I was all sorted on this…..

But after last members post….

I have an absolutely BRAND NEW, UNCIRCULATED $1 bill from 1988 that does NOT pass when in validator test mode….

As I understand it, in test mode, a validated bill will drop into the area of the cash can if validated, and be spit out if it’s not validated..

Perhaps 1988 is too early for validation?

Does this indicate something else is wrong with the validator?

Or…???

In test mode, this threads instruction reads:

“ Now, flip 1-2-3 and 8 down, install the bill unit in the machine, turn power on to the machine. ”

Then, flip switch #8 up…. Which sets the validator ready to accept bills in test mode.

QUESTION

With the #2 and #3 switches STILL down, will the test mode NOT validate $1 and $5 bills — which are assigned to those switches?

Any current dollar bill in circulation should be accepted.  Sounds like some thing else is wrong, or maybe it needs to be calibrated.  That requires a special paper that is difficult to find these days.  I think somewhere there was some instructions on how to make your own with a laser printer, but my google foo isn't working too well today and I didn't find it.

The switches do different things in test mode.  In operational mode it would reject them, but not in test mode.

I found the post I remembered finally.  It requires construction paper, not a laser printer.  Here's a link to the procedure which also has a link to the post on making the paper.
