Power supply - changed out, and related issues.
« on: May 25, 2024, 05:17:30 AM »
First off, I’m new to this.
I bought a Ballys s5500 machine that was working but not working well. With the help from Spin and Klar I was able to replace the battery and the power supply and the machine ran like new. Only thing left to do was to replace a few of the button bulbs and top candle bulbs that burned out. I replaced the small button bulbs with #86 and 295/555 bulbs in the two large buttons. Everything worked!!! Two days later I turned on the machine on and the button lights and candle lights worked but then went out. The top 5v breaker blew and I rest it twice but no lights. I then replaced all the bulbs with leds and still no lights. Can anyone give the next steps to trying to solve this issue. The game works perfectly and the fluorescents all work.
Thank you
Mike

Does the machine still play when the 5 amp breaker is tripped?

Yes the machine still works when the breaker tripped. The break has not tripped in days. It only tripped two times. Now it seams like there is no power going to the button lights, candle lights and bell. The buttons work to play the game but no lights.

I have a Ballys S5500
I’ve just changed out the power supply. How do I go about checking the voltage and then adjusting it. I see there is an adjustment screw on the new power supply. I do see the diagram that is attached with this post. Just don’t know how to do it. I have a volt meter.

A few posts behind this one shows the connector pinout and where the voltages can be read.
Put your black lead on GND and read the 5 and 12 volt signals coming from the power supply unit.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Thank you!
I will do that.
My problem is all my button lights are out. Coin in, coins accepted, max bet, spin, bet one. All were working then the machine tripped the 5v breaker just after I turned the machine on. Machine was working perfectly. Machine still works perfectly just no lights. Fluorescent work.
Before this problem I had replaced the power supply and battery on the board. The machine was working great then out of the blue the bulb issue happened.
I have checked all connections and resat all the connections on the back plain. The breakers are all in but no power to the lights. So I thought it may be the new power supply voltage.
Any thoughts.

The bulbs only use the large capacitors voltage. It is the huge blue capacitor inside the power supply box.
The small SMPS power supply only provides voltage for the board's chips.

Can I buy that part new? If so do you have the part number? I believe there is some printing on the under side of large blue can.  Or do I have to buy an old used one.
I really appreciate your help on this. Without you and the others on this site,  I would be lost. I have enough knowledge of this make to do some minor repairs.
Again THANK YOU for Your help.

I have never found one of those being defective. Concentrate on the connectors on the backplane board.
The large board the computer board plugs into.
Re-seat those connectors.

I have reset all of them. Unplugged looked at the pins made sure all looked good. Then refit all of them on the back plane. Were should I go next?

I’ve run a non contact voltage detector over the wires behind the breakers. It didn’t sound off when running it over the top 5v wires. But did on the 25v wires. The breaker did trip twice when the incident manifested itself. It’s now pushed in. I will check when I get home.
Thank you again!!!!

Is the wiring schematic available anywhere for the Ballys S5500?
