S2000 Red LED flashing - Machine will not boot
« on: August 10, 2024, 06:46:21 PM »
My S2000 5X pay was working fine, then a couple of weeks ago would not load or boot up   I have red-Flashing LED on MPU.

With MPU Board removed, the Reel lights come on and the Bill Validator cycles normally.  With the MPU board installed, I get nothing.

The enhanced BV bezel cycles up, then shows flashing blue ambulance light.

I have checked and reseated the chips, checked the fuses, and replaced both the button battery and the Varta battery.  Orange Power wire shows +25.20V, and Red shows +12.92V, so it appears power supply is working. I cleaned MPU connectors and several others with contact cleaner, and do not notice any bend pins on MPU connectors.

Not sure where to go from here?  :Scratch-Head: :EmoticonHelp4:

Sounds like you've done about all you can without replacing the MPU board itself.  That would be the next step, or send it off for repair.  Member Lookes may be able to help you with that.

The solid black wire (pin 7) output on the power supply should read 6.3-65vdc. That actually boots the MPU. If that's good, send your MPU to Lookes as Tilt suggested.

I'm showing 6.40VDC at the black wire on this connector.   Is this the correct connector to test at?

That is the correct one. I checked continuity with pin 7.

So, talked to John Lookes, and was getting ready to send the MPU to him when I noticed that the BASE chip on the Auxiliary board was a little loose in the socket.   After a couple of wiggles, I was able to get rid of the RED LED, and it attempted to boot.  Got part-way through the Netplex tests then reported "RAM ERROR - CALL ATTENDANT"   Tried reset key and reset button on MPU but so far, no luck.  I will need to replace that BASE socket so it gets a reliable connection, but not sure RAM ERROR is related?

So, going to look through the posts here to see what is said about that.   :Scratch-Head:

WHOO HOO!

Open Door, Jackpot Key 4 times, Reset Button for 2-3 seconds, Click your heels 3 times, and the RAM ERROR is Gone!

Thanks Everyone!   I think I got this one nailed!

Glad to hear you got it running  :applause:, but perhaps you can explain or post a picture of what you're calling the "base chip on the auxillary board"?  The base chip is on the MPU board of a 50X series board, and you said you had already checked/reseated those.

Sure!  Here is a photo the MPU cage.  There is a full (Main) board, and on the left half is what I called the Auxiliary board, which is on top, and contains the game chips, the sound card and the "BASE" chip (Circled)

That explains it.  You have 1270 MPU with a legacy adapter board.  The game software on a 50X series board plugs directly into the MPU board except for the sound SIMM card which is installed on a soundboard that plugs into it like your legacy adapter board does.
