S+ Slant - Bill Validator
« on: September 22, 2024, 04:57:47 AM »
Good morning,

Not sure why but I brought and old S+ slant back to life.  Last item to do is the BV.  It boots up with all the normal sounds but no bezel light on front nor will it try to accept bills.  Here's what I know/have done:

-WBA-13-SS
-Replaced MPU battery
-Flashed Ram
-Ran BV chip and have BV enabled
-Swapped out BV with known, working BV
-Took slant BV and installed in another S+, it works
-Pulled/cleaned all connectors throughout
-Everything else on S+ works as expected so tells me all door buttons/optics are OK
-There's a faint, green light on the board attached to the front where the bills go into but the bezel itself is not lit up

I suspect it's just a setting I have wrong.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Thanks Sunrise Side.  Possibly, the bezel does have a faint green glow however.  I ran the BV install chip again with the MPU and it was still set @ 9-1. I wonder if any other settings could have been changed (by me) that would affect it?

You think Badbaud meant that the 4th dipswitch should be ON....not all of them?

I'm not sure where the dips should be set at.
Badbaud would know more about those validators than I.

use the diagnostic flip cards, input test ( 10-1 in the winner paid window)  flip cards tell you all this information, go to test 27-1, that will turn on the bezel lamps, allow you to insert a bill, the unit should take in the bill, hold it for a few seconds, then return it.

Hope this helps

Ran the 27-1 and no cigar. Bezel does have some dim lighting but not what I would expect.   I wonder if it’s a wiring issue? Previous owner replaced power supply; reason I know is because he left old one mounted to wall and the new one unsecured on the bottom. I checked continuity on two wires from the plug in top back left corner to bezel solder joints, no issues. Also turned on dip switch 4 only, no change.  I know the BV works because I tested it in another machine but didn’t check bezel. It spools up in the slant so getting power but won’t even attempt to take a bill.   Here are some pics to show wiring.

that connector with the black and white wire is the control signal coming from the bill unit, in test 27, you should have plus 5 v dc on those wires.  it is used to turn on the bezel lamps, provided the bezel board is getting the required 7vac hot and return voltages.

post pictures of the bezel board and wiring.

you need three things to make sure the bill unit is enabled, in test 5-0, 5-1 or 5-2, you advance through that menu and check 9-1

second, with a 6 in the coins played window, whatever you set your denomination, it should be displayed in the winner paid window (25),  presing the spin reels button should not change this setting.

third, test 7 , should show two numbers, hopefully both are set to 1000.

last item to check is to make sure there is something in J-6 on the motherboard, this is the connection coming from the bill unit power supply, it has the tx and rx wires that communicate between the cpu and bill unit.

hope this helps

Thanks Jim,

Will run the tests again later, here are some pics.  Definitely nothing in J-6 on the MB.  You can see the green lights on the bezel but the individual LEDs behind the bezel never light up

Jim, thanks for the chat and clarification yesterday.  Discovered reason flip card test wouldn't work is I needed to burn down to zero credits.  All makes senses now.  As an update:

- Ran test 27 for bezel. Have 4.97v on white (blue) wire, and 4.35v on black (purple) wire at bezel circuit board
- 9-1 is set (enabled) for BV
- Denomination set @ 25
- Test 7, both @ 1000
- J-8 @ motherboard is connected, but nothing @ J-6.  I'll re-check today

And, my speaker is busted but I temporarily tried another and sound works.  Is the black (purple) wire voltage too low to make it operate...should be 5v?  Thanks for any additional thoughts

Have decided the juice is not worth the squeeze on this BV for a slant.  It's now ready for its next owner or possibly a boat anchor.  On to the next project.  Thanks to all for the assist getting her up and running!
