Bell / Ringer checkup
« on: October 08, 2024, 06:57:41 PM »
I've read the bell ringer on S2000 games might be muffled a bit.  Mine sounds really crumby so I took it apart to see if there's anything obviously wrong with it.

Is anything on backwards?  The plunger isn't too smoothe feeling.  The spring is much stronger in one direction.  The plunger hits the bell towards the left side of this pic.

I plugged the solenoid back into the power harness and used the menu I/O Output test to run the bell pulsing.

I can see why the bell doesn't make much ringing, the plunger doesn't really have much movement/power.

Does the orientation and spring setup look correct in the above pic?

The other thing is that it seems like the coil sleeve  (if there even is one) isn't providing smooth motion for the plunger.  Normal??

Well I contacted the original manufacturer of the bell and they were pretty cool.  They sent me a quote for the exact part# on my S2000 bell and I bought one.  When it showed up, I tested it out and it didn't sound too great so I removed it and re-aligned the solenoid/plunger and rotated the actual bell off center to give the plunger a little more throw.  Make sure NOTHING is touching the metal bell that could dampen the ring and install it with the plunger facing upwards so gravity can work to your advantage.  In Test Mode it sounds perfectly just like an old telephone ringer.  However, the game seems to modulate the pulses it a little bit during a jackpot payout that sort of gives it a random sound versus the test mode.
