The Little Dotmatrix Series 400 That Couldn’t…

Hello everyone, I am currently repairing a WMS Dotmartix machine Jackpot Stampede Deluxe.

What happened is that the machine appears to boot up, every light comes on, the bill validator cycles and the Dotmatrix reads “William’s” until…SUDDENLY. Bam! The entire display shuts off.

There sits a simi-lifeful slot machine whose reels don’t spin while its displays (including the reel 8-segment displays) cannot come on no matter how hard it tries. I left the machine booting for an hour with the same result

(I ended up getting a nice haul of Christmas presents plus wrapping paper as a result lol)

I checked the power supply which I found at least 5 brown goop piles ozzing out of the caps and capacitor’s bases. I also checked the battery which read 3.6 volts along with reseating the EPROMS, checking for loose connections and ensuring that there aren’t any shor

The 250v fuse did require some wiggling to keep the machine from powering off mid-boot cycle. Cleaning and pushing in the fuse did help a tad. The WMS boot screen remains on for 5 minutes 30 seconds versus its original 5 minutes

The CPU itself light  3 out of 5 LED lights while blinking the 6th light indicating both a power and jurisdiction settings error. Light 1 and 5 remain off. Lights 2-3 remain on even after the Dotmateix screen shuts off

Lastly, I decided to reseat the reels to see if there are any shorts or loose reel connections. Still I received the same booting results. However, now a red LED light illuminates underneath reel three’s PBC.

Jim gave me a call and referred me to NLG member "Terps." Said he used to carry a lot of WMS parts including power supplies.

You  can caps  from, Mouser,  Newark,  Digikey, etc. Don't buy off brand cheaply made caps from Amazon or Ebay.  They're usually way out of spec.

I would recommend recapping the power supply for getting someone to recap it for you before I did the ATX conversion. I have heard just as many people have great results as I have had people with bad results because they did something incorrectly as it is a little involved. Especially if you're not that familiar with electronics. This is just my opinion and opinions very so if you think that you're capable then have at it. I hope you have good results and you get your machine up and running again. Bill

I just spoke to the person who said that they can recap the power supply. They noted that the caps look okay (no swelling or discoloration. However, the left coil looks burnt and melted according to the person. Here is a photo of the power supply:

Sounds great. Let us know how it works out. If he or she is able to fix it then find out if they would be okay with posting their contact info as I'm sure many others would definitely be interested. You can disconnect the power supply and look underneath it to see if there are any burnt out blackened areas as that could be a good indicator of an issue. Also if you pull out that power supply board underneath there is a fuse that perhaps might have burnt out that you can check. Regardless keep us updated

According to your description and the LED status, it appears you have a power supply issues and this is very common, failing power supplies. Yes I/O cards do go bad, but PS failure is more common. Especially if that is the original. You will need to check the outputs of your PS while under load. I would recommend swapping out the PS from another working machine. There is two types, 12 pin and 16 pin.

I’ll check for the fuse which is my next suspect.i wonder how I can check the power supply while it’s under load?
