Red, White, And Blue need help
« on: December 13, 2021, 07:27:32 PM »
Whenever I power on the machine the reels will lock into place, lights will turn on but display will not work nor will game play. Was wondering if anyone had any advice, will post some pictures if needed.

Disconnect the power cable from the motherboard and reinstall it a few times with the power off. May just be bad connections on the power cable and motherboard header pins/connection.

If you find that helps- try to clean the motherboard pins. Check that the cable connector is ok and not showing signs of heat damage.

Sounds like you have power to board, but maybe a bad connection as the machine is not initializing.

If that doesn't work then we can go from there. If it does help, I have new cables and header with better pins. PM  me if you need one. They are listed in the classifieds if you want to a picture-

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Have completed the steps. Pins seems ok, no signs of heat damage really at all. I can slide the connector left to right when it is connected ever so slightly dont know if thats normal or not, but. Still no display.

Thanks for the pics.  It's an early model S+ without a bill validator.  Check the fuses in the power supply also remove the MPU board and post a pic of it please.

How to know if the fuses are working properly, I have a multimeter but unsure how to check it with it. More experienced in the automotive field. I found a small brown mark near the game reel on the MPU as well as I believe the CMOS battery is quite corroded there if that is what i am looking at in the picture, my soldering job on the battery is not the best by any means.

Thanks for the pics.  I don't see anything obviously out of place.

Remove the fuses and check for continuity.  Put your meter on the ohms function and the leads on each end of the fuse.  It should read 0.

Did you see a 12 error code before you replaced the battery or did you replace the battery because it wasn't doing anything and you thought it may have been dead?

Can't see the notch on the Game eprom because of the tape, make sure the notch on the chip is the same way as the reel chip.

I had put the battery in because when I bought it the guy said when he bought it he was told it needed a battery and was supplied with it , as I had installed it thinking it would solve my issue it didn’t and now I’m back to guessing what it could be . Am at work right now will test the fuses when I get home , but I did notice on the game reel chip there is one connector broke off that is why it is taped assuming it may had fixed it I guess. I cannot get the display to display any codes at all or coins played etc , but Reels will lock into place whenever powered on , molex connector seems great and secure , no burns . I can play with the middle fuse and push it i and put and watch the reels come from being locked and not being locked (freespinning) could that be an issue????

The fuse holder has a spring inside . With power off and machine unplugged you can use something to try to stretch the spring and see if that fixes the problem with the fuse holder.

Check the battery voltage, if it was an old new one it may be too low. Just in case.

Had tried to stretch out the spring , the spring in the cap actually comes out don’t know if that’s normal but made it easy to stretch , same thing happening . Didn’t get around to checking it with a multimeter yet , will do that tonight . I will also test the battery

Well that definitely could cause problems.  Do you mean a pin is broken and they attempted to take it back together?  Also like Jim asked, is it plugged in the board correctly.  Can't tell from the picture.

I took off the tape and checked it and took a picture I believe they are in there the right way but I’m no expert . The pin that is broke off is the one in the front and I believe the tape was there to provide possible better connection of some sort . Wouldn’t the display still work despite the chip may have problems ?

They're installed correctly.  Still hard to tell from the photo, but is the pin I circled the pin that is broken?  Is it the chip or socket that is broken?

The Game (E)PROM is the games operating system.  Without it you won't have any lights or displays working like what you're seeing.

Yes that is the broken off connector, The chip is broken I dont believe any harm is done to the chip holder , that specific connection is broke off the chip itself.

Well my money is on a new SP chip then.  That particular pin is the VCC (or power to the IC).  No power, no work.  Contact member RB and get a replacement.  Hopefully that will get it working again.
