Bally coil replacement
« on: May 06, 2019, 04:52:23 PM »

I'm working on a 785 Progressive that has several burned out CD-29-1500 coils in the top unit. Was this coil replaced by another part number? Other than 1 here or there I've been unable to locate these coils. Is there a reason I couldn't go to the common higher wattage CD-29-1600? I've seen other progressive reels use the CD-29-1600 and curious as to why this particular machine is specd to CD-29-1500.

Thanks in advance!

Is it a possibility the 1500 coils were improperly installation?
Thus causing them over heat.

After seeing so many burned, that was my first thought and l checked the parts list for this exact progressive mechanism and it calls for 1500. My next thought was that the 1600 was a replacement for the 1500 because of the problem but I haven't been able to confirm.
A little side note is that this machine is all original. As far as I know it never made it to a casino. It has never been modified and I don't see any sign of anything ever being disassembled, replaced or repaired. The interior is as new as new could be in an old machine. I bought it from a gentleman who said he uncrated it himself and it sat in his home for the past 30+ years before going in storage.

Please post photos of the machine and the burned coils.
Sounds very interesting would like to see it.

Have 1088 made in 1980 right before the E-Series came out. Super clean, maybe was in a Casino for six months.

Here are the pics of the machine. Notice the low coin in coin out count and low progressive total. The totals match between coin in and progressive advancement. The machine has the original grease. Unfortunately the machine was stored by the ocean and has pitting.

Two more pictures. Notice the burn marks on the sides of the switches. The first coil is good, the remaining 4 are bad.

Nice machine!

By the picture of the burnt coils, I would suspect the coils were constantly energized.
Or receiving higher voltage.
Do they still work?

Have the same type of machine in my shop.
When I get a chance, will check the coil numbers.

I’d bet the 1600’s would work, but presume the bad coil is in the 1 cent or 10 cent position. Obviously they are pulsed far more frequently than the $100 column.
I would use the higher resistance 1600 in the $100 spot & put that original into the lower place burnt spot...
Probably less problems down the road?

Are they bad or just discolored??  Try jumping them each to test...
A lot of those old coils just look bad but still work

Thanks for replies. I found progressive wheel assembly parts and replaced the coils as well as the bobbins and plastic linkage arm to the metal plungers. Everything was melted together.
