New to hobby - Bally E2224
« on: October 28, 2019, 09:12:44 AM »
Hello all,
I just got a Bally E2224 basket case and have been working on it.  Its history is not good, was assembled piece by piece from ebay purchases and the last owner never got it to do more than light up.  I am experienced with repairing Bally pinballs of that era but never saw or even played a slot. Anyway I now have it booting to 00. 00. 1 but have not been able to advance to TEST mode. Hitting TEST does nothing and hitting RESET sets a 2 in display.  It is obvious that at some point the hopper cable was ripped off and soldered back and I suspect, not correctly. I have a poor schematic of the hopper board but the J2 numbers are smudged and there is no cable color coding.  Can anyone supply a better schematic?  While I am on that subject, I felt a bit naked without a schematic of the MPU board, but it looks like I am beyond that now anyway, though I still feel naked, and also don't have an I/O board schematic either, like I would expect with Bally pinballs.
The upper cabinet is bare. I have a bell and a sound card in a cardboard box but I do not know if they both get installed up there as the holes I see in the case do not allow for both it seems. Also where the heck do you mount the speaker?? and I also have a mystery board marked AS-3178-1 and have no clue what that is or where it goes.
I would appreciate any assistance that can be rendered here. Thanking you in advance --  Travis

Welcome to your ongoing nightmare and NLG!
Since this is a basket case I would suggest that you post pictures of the machine and each board.
There are some people here that can help you but we will need to know exactly what you have.
The photos must be under one meg but you can post as many as you like.

With the new cell phone cameras pictures tend to be several meg. I suggest sending (emailing) the picture to yourself as you receive an option to control the size.
The received pic will be under 1mb, which is then suitable for posting.

So I got the MPU to boot OK as in the first picture 00. 00. 1 BUT
it would not respond to the TEST button on the hopper board
the second picture shows the cable going to J2 on the hopper board which I suspect is the problem
the wires were ripped and connected to different colored wires on a connector that was taken from someplace else (wrong size, wrong key placement, etc) so I need to re-do this completely
without knowing what the right cable colors are I am screwed however

last picture shows empty top cabinet where the sound board, bell?, and speaker needs to go??
also have an extra board of unknown function 3178
