G20 pixelated lower mld after e4690 card upgrade
« on: October 03, 2020, 01:53:42 PM »
I recently installed an  e4690 card in my 625 brainbox in my G20.  The lower mld screen is "fuzzy", pixelated  or blurry.  I have tried several different adapters and dvi to vga cables with no improvement.  The mld monitor is one of the 4 fan models.  The upper monitor is very clear.  The only difference that I have been able to ascertain so far is that the upper monitor is displaying at 60hz and the lower shows 59hz.  I have not been able to find any setting in both the monitor osd menu or the ekey diagnostic menu to remedy this.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,Greg

If you change your menus to display less game tiles per screen, does it make a difference?  Looks like a rendering issue to me.

The display was clear before adding the new card, when the monitor was hooked up to the 625's onboard vga port.  Then menu hasn't changed, even the denom amount, etc is blurry.  Thanks for the idea though Rick!

Maybe the new card is defective?  Can you put things back the way they were and see if it works that way?

so i just removed the new card and switched back to the original vga to vga cable.  the clarity does indeed come back, but now for some reason I am not getting and "red" on the lower monitors.  when I go into diagnostics the red purity test does not show up on the lower screens and all the graphics appear blued out.  and the plot thickens....

also the lower monitors are still reading at 59hz, so that is apparently not the reason for the loss of clarity

The missing red is probably a cabling issue, do you have another vga cable to try? Is the resolution in the lower monitor 1366x768 without the video card?

right on the money with the red issue.  tried another vga cable and that is all good.  the lower mld is displaying 1366x1536 at 59hz with both the card in or with the onboard graphics.  i am leaning towards the card being the issue.  I read another post where a member stated he was using  Radeon 3650 512MB x16 PCIe cards in his g20's.  I just ordered one to give it a try, other card may very well have issues and the 3650 was cheap.

I have a G20 with E4690 and I don't have the pixelated issue. What OS version are you using?  I'm also thinking that maybe doing everything from scratch with the E4690 might make a difference.  When I bought my E4690, I don't really remember if I had the jagged issue you have now.  I have since redone my mpu so many times, but always with an e4690 on it.

I don't believe the model of the card is the problem, just the actual one that I have may be.  I am hesitant to wipe the machine as it has a lot of games that came on it and I do not have the loaders for said games to reinstall.  I just ordered a 3650 as they seem easier to come by and are cheaper than the 4690 that i have($30 vs $110).  If the 3650 has the same results I may have to look further into doing a reinstall. From what I had read, I thought adding the 4690 was pretty plug and play, but make something isn't sinking.  I will update when I find out any more.

You could just replace the hard drive or SSD if you want to start over, that way you save everything that is on the drive since you don't have the loaders.

Have you tried reloading the OS?? (you can remove the OS without wiping the drive).

Possibility reloading the OS will reinstall some missing video driver files (???)

Just brain storming here...

And then there's the possibility of a bad card....

Let us know what you find.

Did you buy that from Sam?

Okay guys and gals Everything is finally all clear and pretty.  I swapped the 4690 card for a brand new 3650 card and the images were crisp.  The 3650 card came with its own dvi to vga adapter which I used.  Wanting to be thorough and not just assume my 4690 card was bad, I swapped it back in.  Upon powering up the image was fuzzy, and I was missing green again.  I plugged and unplugged the adapter from the dvi port on the card several times and bingo green came back and the image was sharp and clear!  I am thinking this all comes down to simply having some gunk/corrosion in the pin holes of the dvi port on the 4690 card, it was used.  Thank you all for you ideas and help!  There really are very few forums on the internet with a better group of people than this!
