Fam 14 and Fam20
« on: May 31, 2024, 02:38:16 PM »
Hello all I was wondering what the differences are between the 2 families? I read all the time about people trying to switch to Fam20 and wondering is it worth it. Thanks

I guess in a nutshell, with newer hardware comes upgraded software. I only have Fam14 games available to me on my G20 which I was advised to start out learning as much as I could at an affordable price. Best piece of advise for me!

So, having said that, Fam20 requires higher hardware requirements although you can “convert’ from Fam14 to Fam20 with boot chips, video card, OS, new diagnostic key, Ascent software, etc.

I think you get the picture. But with newer technologies come better games. I still think many of the slot machines don’t take full advantage of the graphic capabilities. With either Fam14 or Fam20, you still need to obtain games. I believe because there are more MLD, Trimlines, G20/G23 and they have been around longer than the Crystal line, there’s more information and resources out there.

There are are a number of members who frequent this board who could provide more information on this topic.  This a rather basic comparison. And having gone through this myself just a few months ago, I’m really enjoying my G20.

I liked the family 20 games so much that I bought another G20 and have one machine dedicated to fam14 and one to fam20.  There are some good games on the fam20 side, but not the volume that I had with the family 14, and some games just won't work as they are built for the crystal platform.  The cash erruption games are very good.  People complain about the performance of the machine, but I have found that if you load a machine and wait a while the performance increases.  When I first enabled Hephaestus Cash Erruption it lagged a little bit.  I waited 10 minutes and it plays perfectly and now when I switch back and forth I have no issue.  I also put the turbo mode on and it performs even better.  This game is very simular to the fireball series.  The Hot Roulette games are good as well, even though I only have about 15 games loaded on it I like it enough to have the machine. I would suggest getting another brainbox first and the boot chips, upgraded ram and video card and then swapping them until you decide if it is right for you.  sccarlso sells them and you won't be out much money at all to do this.  Good luck!
