I GT Slot Machine Model #96438300
« on: July 30, 2024, 04:19:12 PM »
It's been awhile since I worked on one of these IGT slot machines I know the battery needs to get replaced on the board. Just wondering if I have to reset the board with the reset chip just like the older ones?

That "model number" doesn't tell us much.
A nice photo of the machine outside and inside will get you much more help.
BTW The re's no such thing as a "reset chip"....maybe a Clear chip is what you meant to say?
Why would you want to erase everything?
If this is an S+ slot machine, you will probably have to go buy a proper SET chip as well...why? Because you will have erased everything and disabled the bill acceptor with the Clear chip.

There's ONLY two times you would EVER need a Clear chip for an S+ slot machine...>>>

I'm not saying that I want to reset everything I'm just wondering if I have to use a reset chip after I change the battery or just changing the battery will do it?

We can't give you and answer to your question because we don't know what type of machine you have.  You posted this in the M-Slot section, a M-Slot doesn't use any type of clear/reset/set chip after a battery change.  Like bunker said model numbers don't tell us anything, pictures do.   :Please_Post_Pictures_2:

Here's a picture of the slot machine I'm working on and the board, it has 2 batteries.

You have a S2000 machine.  It has a 50x series MPU board. That big green varta battery can and should be removed for home use.  Follow the VFD instructions, you need to flip the jackpot reset key 4 times then push the white test button for 3 seconds then close the door and wait for the reels to spin.

I don't know what the VFD is. If I remove the green battery by soldering it off the board what goes in it's place, nothing? What about the round battery? Thank you

Correct - nothing.  The VFD is the display to left of the denom that says testing memory in your pic.

Not sure what VFD stands and I hate to ask more questions  but what's denom, where is it located and what do i do with it? I'm assuming it's on the board somewhere. Also, do I replace the round battery?
Thank you.

Clip out the green Varta battery with some sharp diagonal cutters.

Unsolder (carefully) the 3 volt Lithium Ion button battery.  You can post a WTB here or just get on on sites such as Digikey. It's a CR2354 3 volt Lithium Ion battery.
I'm 99.8 percent sure this is the battery but CHECK yours to make sure it matches.

I'm moving this thread to IGT S2000.

Don't sweat it, that's how everyone learns.  ;)
Just to be clearer, on your machine denomination is the $0.25 sticker in the center.  AKA, cost per play.

Also, do I replace the round battery?
You can go with Shorttrack's suggestion but I'd recommend that you unsolder it and and replace the soldered battery with a button cell holder of the same size.  On a home machine that isn't on all the time, the cell drains pretty quickly, and will need to be replaced relatively often.  I just use CR2032 cells that are cheaper and available about anywhere.   The 2354's are a little harder to find and cost at least twice as much.

I'm not positive but you may need to remove the U16 chip as well after you cut out the green Varta battery it it gives you an error?  Search here for "varta battery removal" and you will even find a few video how to's.  What ever you do.. just get it out of there as it will corrode, leak and, can ruin the MPU board.

Just wondering what that Varta green 3.6-volt battery is needed for? If it's just to light up the VFD then I will just cut it out or unsolder it from the board. But if has a useful purpose then I'll replace it.
Thank you

Varta battery is not needed for home use, in a casino it notifies security the door has been opened.  Just remove it.

You need the VFD to tell you what to do next when setting up the machine.

Leaving U16 on 50x boards will not give an error.

You most certainly NEED to remove the U16 on the 50x boards after the Varta.  This is part of the charging circuit and will cause errors and problems (because the battery is now missing) if you don't remove it.  U79 on the 1270 and u16 on the 502/504 boards is needed with the Varta removal.  Lookes has stated this and he does board-level repairs after Varta damage.

Remove U79 on 50X boards. Remove U16 on 1270's. If you remove U16 on a 50X board, you will have no volume control and 3 of the LED's will not work.

Lookes recommends removing it, but it will not cause errors on 50X series boards if you don't.  1270 boards require an additional component to be removed, but not 50X.  None of my S2000s have anything removed except for the varta and they've worked like that just fine for years and a couple for a decade now.

I do see 50X boards with random door errors caused by U79. If it is left on the board it can cause wide and random voltage fluctuations on the TT5v supply (2.3v to over 11v).  I'm of the opinion that as I've seen as much as 11+ volts on this 5 volt supply, that it can fry the main door optic emitter diode.  Some boards have hardly any fluctuation. (?)  I remove it and other parts on every 50X board I repair.
