Help. 1989 P&M 5 Cent Poker Machine Blue Screen
« on: September 11, 2024, 11:57:36 AM »
Hey whats going on not sure if this is where i can post this i dont know where else to look. Im 28 i started working newly at IT and my boss is asking me to see if i can figure out whats wrong with his IGT machine. He got this 5 cent IGT poker machine many years ago and he said one day he got the blue screen and it never came back on anymore. Here are some pictures and we've tried pressing the buttons to reset but have no idea what they do inside. The screen is just stuck on blue and I have more pictures of it just cant post it. If anyone can reach out and help let me know, We already pulled out the board and still nothing.

A few questions, is the game playing blind by any chance? In other words, if you put a coin in does it accept it.
Reason I ask is because the monitor has two things going on.
1. Its all blue, this is probably because it is not getting a signal from the game….more on that in a minute.
2. It has retrace lines. Thats an entirely different problem specific to the monitor.

My gut instinct is two things are going on. First I suspect the backup battery on the board is dead….if there is one. I don’t recognize this game so it might not have one….or its under that miniature board in the middle. If it does not play blind then there is a problem with the game board.

If the machine is throwing an error I suspect you cannot see it because the monitor also has a problem. You get double the fun if my theory is correct. I need you to post a picture of the monitor with the door open so I can see the entire face of it to make a guess on what kind it is. I might have to talk you through how to pull the monitor out…if you haven’t figured that out yet.

Chris

No it does not play any game or sound. Other than the blue screen. I am not sure what else i can check since its my my boss's house. Are the female pin connectors suppose to be like that too? do they usually have some missing lke the one i provided in the picture? What other things can i test on the mpu Im not sure how to use a multimeter for the little batteries around the board. and we live nowhere near a shop in NM

I'm going to have to agree with Chris on this. Maybe your board is not fully booted due to other issues (RAM clear, complaining about missing components, etc). You won't be able to see if it is telling you anything because it seems like you have a monitor issue. As he posted out you have retrace lines and full brightness blue screen. From your pictures I can see it is a Ceronix monitor that have a lot of issues with the solder joints on the PRA boards. This will cause the retrace and blue screen. If you are familiar with CRT monitors and soldering, I would reflow the solder on the blue PRA.

If you do this make sure to discharge the CRT before doing anything, although they are self discharging, never trust it!

After you know the screen works you can further troubleshoot the board. I'm not familiar with the machine you have, but it so not a fortune II as far as I can tell. Chris could probably identify better but it may be a Fortune I or a PE/PE+. So issue I had on my machine is likely different from yours.
Thanks,
Justin

Yeah its likely an older board, the lines seem to just be like the camera picking up the refresh rate dont think its the monitor. There is no sound none of the buttons or keys do anything outside or inside the machine. With the board disconnected the monitor stays blue so it leads me to believe its the board.

*****My Questions maybe you guys can screenshot and circle the parts on the board but what can i look for to maybe test with a multimeter for flow, like why is there so many little batteries everywhere on the board.
Also where is the RAM and what other troubleshooting methods can i do.
What is that little red button on the mpu board that says CK and switches from 1-8?

^^^From what my boss says he was playing and after he tried to reset the game by holding the key and pressing two buttons from the inside it turned blue and just never worked again^^^^

Honestly, I have no experience with the brand P&M. I wouldn't be so quick to assume the monitor is good. It's possible what he did by hitting the buttons cleared the RAM and you have to do a procedure to get it back to running.

Most CRT's especially that age should be blank with no video input (no board).

The above is all assumptions, I don't claim to know anything about your specific machine. I just know the Ceronix Monitors a little because of my recent adventures 😂
Thanks,
Justin
