Set Chip Nightmare
« on: November 05, 2024, 04:33:17 PM »
I have a S plus 5 times pay deluxe. I recently replaced the battery on the board and it was working great except the bill validator. I purchased a set 15 chip from eBay and installed it today with the instructions. When it was installed I never got the reading to show up. I uninstalled the set chip and reinstalled my game chip and know all I get it the lights on with no reel spin (there is power to reels). Do I need to do a system clear?  :banghead:

No Clear needed.
You may never ever need it.

Is the SET015 chip the correct direction?
There's a little notch on top of the chip body at one end.
Look at the SS chip in the socket next to it.
Gently work back up the chip out of the socket to check and see if you folded any chip legs underneath the chip.
If so, straighten out with a pair or tweezers.

Set chip was in the correct direction. I was supposed to take out the game prom and not the reel prom? I took out the game prom and replaced with the 015 chip. That's when things went wrong. All legs appear straight.

GAME chip gets swapped with the SET chip.
SET the 9 to a "1" to enable the acceptor and SET the 6 to a "25" for a quarter denomination.
No need to touch Reel prom.

Herer's those instructions from the link I gave you above.
Obviously, you didn't read it, or you wouldn't have asked...lol...>>>

I did read the post that you sent me. The issue is that I get NO lights to come up at all. No number 9, 0 or anything displayed. Think I am having a power issue. Machine worked great prior to putting set chip in.

The SET chip may be corrupted?
You may need another one to enable the DBV.

When you put the SP Game chip back in, you said your reels don't spin.
Something is wrong with either your SP chip or the MPU.

Try this as a test...put the SP chip in the GAME socket, power ON the machine.
Move one of the reels with your hand.
The number 41, 42, or 43 should come up on the display.... depending on which reel you moved.
Close the door.
The reels should spin...if not, then you have another problem.

Set 15 is pretty universal however there are some games that require different ones.
What is the SP game chip and what does the PSR say is needed.

Given the behavior your seeing. I suspect one of the pins are folded under the reel chip. Been there done this.

Pull both chips and make sure the legs are straight and re-seat them.

I got home from work and tried a few things. There is power to the reels, I moved the reel and closed the door and still get no led lights and the reels don't spin. The chips look good to me ( I will try to post pictures) no folded legs that I can see. I do have another working s plus. could I put this MPU board in that machine to test it? Will that mess things up even more? I messed with the common problem with the plug for the mpu board and still nothing.

Is the big square denomination light in the middle of the reel glass 25C on ?
If so it’s not that molex

Does the candle flash with the door open ?

Swapping MPU boards won’t mess anything up.

The .25 light is on. No candle lights. I put the mpu board in my other s plus and same thing no lights except the .25 cent light. Bad chip or MPU board? Transformer on MPU board? Having a hard time posting pictures for you guys to see. I tried to see the numbers on the game chip but can't make them out. I do see someone has a piece if paper with sp1271 written on it?

You might have an SP1271 GAME PROM...that's a good one to have.
The most important light to see right now is the [Coins Played] leds on the reel glass display.
The candle light really depends on whether or not it's burned out or not.
The bottom half of the candle should flash when the door is opened.
It will continue to flash until you complete one game.

...There is power to the reels, I moved the reel and closed the door and still get no led lights and the reels don't spin...

Sounds like the door optics aren't "seeing" each other if you moved the reels.
The reels are supposed to spin back to where they were before you moved them, a couple of seconds after you close the door.
The [Coins Played] number on the reel glass display should go out momentarily, when the door latch is pushed down, then come back on.

I'm trying to see if your machine has the correct behavior to see/diagnose what's wrong.
The .25 denom light runs on an entirely different circuit.

One thing for sure, if you don't have any number showing on the display in the [Coins Played] window, it's possible the MPU battery is dead or low and the MPU cannot "boot up".
I'd separate that MPU battery from the board and check its voltage.

It sounds like he put the potentially bad MPU in his known working S+
I would like to see his known good MPU in the other chassis.
This will determine if door optics etc are working on the suspect chassis.

I have never seen a bad transformer. You can swap MPUs between trays.
4 screws and the transformer molex is all it takes.

My understanding of the problem is that he put the SET chip in the reel prom socket and it went down hill from there.

Once again I would pull both the game chip and the reel chip then reseat both.
If the results are the same I would try the chips in the known working MPU

or he has a bent pin under the MPU?
That could cause problems too.

#1- put known good mpu board in the game that was not working and it worked- lights came on and the gate would play? Put good MPU back in original game (ten times) and now that game is messed up- I will have to go into the menu and see what changed. Reels spin but will not except coins.

#2 Battery on the bad MPU is good. 3.6 volts ( I had just replaced it when I got machine a few weeks ago).

#3- I will pull the Game Chip again and the Reel chip and reseat them and try that.  :hail:

In the good cabinet, you could turn the coin sensitivity potentiometer dial on the coin comparitor, fully counterclockwise.
It should accept any coins because the rake behind the CC will stay opened.

To get photos to work here, you can resize them by emailing them to yourself .
I like using the Windows Paint program on my laptop, to make one side of the photo 1000 pixels wide or high...name it and save to my desktop...discard later on.
Then you can use the green "Attachments and other options" below, to add pics to a Reply.

I really cannot tell from your photos...they are very low resolution.
The SP GAME socket has a jumper right next to it.
If that jumper is on the wrong two pins, the MPU will not "boot up".
Switch the jumper onto the other two pins like the good MPU board.
You need to put a battery on the MPU board too...there's no battery in your 2nd photo.

Also, the chip legs need to be pushed down fully into the socket.
Lke I said, it's hard to tell from your photos, but it appears that one end of the chip body is higher than the other end.

There is a battery on the board. It has wires soldered to a battery holder. Chips are seated all the way down. I pushed them down after these pics were taken.

Are the two chip socket jumpers (GAME & REEL) in the same position as the good MPU?

I will check the dip switches tonight. I have to think they are correct since the board and game worked great before I added the set 15 chip. That's when all the issues started to happen. Any idea what game chip I need or should get if i buy a new one. Game is 5 times pay deluxe with nudging.
