New guy here, with a problem, LOL - Bally 809
« on: December 31, 2024, 10:11:22 AM »
Hello folks,  I recently bought a Bally slot machine, with a known problem.  I've BEEN TOLD it is a 809 lightening??  The guy I got it from showed me the solenoid that was going to be a problem and would have to be replaced sooner than later. Everything worked, there was a slight buzzing.
I was playing and hit a payout, the buzzing got loud and the smell of smoke.
Now here I am looking for help, lol.  Here are before and after pictures.
I have added images.  Hopefully somebody can direct me to a place to get this part.
Any and all help appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Glen

25-gg-7 is the old part number for one of the most common step-up coils bally used.

the new part number is B-25-925 (B spool, 25 gauge wire, 925 turns around the spool).

when a solenoid coil cooks, it almost certainly was being held powered and it turned into a toaster element.

while the paper can char/burn, it's possible the coil survived.  As long as the insulating varnish on the wire didn't get compromised or the sleeve/spool melted, the coil is still fine even if it looks a bit battle worn.  If the unit can be stepped up manually and the plunger isn't sticking in the coil, you're in with a chance it's ok.

if the resistance is around 6.9ohms, it's probably ok.

however, you need to find/fix the problem holding the coil powered or it will let more smoke out.  Typically it would be something like the odds relay staying powered because the end of stroke switch on the odds unit isn't opening.  Could also be an odds relay switch stuck closed.

if you could email me the highest possible resolution picture (email it "actual size") of the odds unit ratchet side (your third picture) to slotpics@cdyn.com, that'd help.

if there's no model/serial number plate on the outside of the cabinet below the handle, is anything written in black sharpie inside on things like the hopper or reel wiper boards?

also, what is the M-645-xxx number on the payout counter disc and what codes are stamped into the slotted metal index discs on the reels?

the reel tapes look like a lightning model (7, bar and bar/5 only).   If you don't have paperwork, a typical 809 lightning is model 809-N.  There's paperwork for that in https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/

I'd like to claim I had a bit too much of the scottish waters of life, but sadly I'm just daft and forgot to push the post button.

your picture is the payout counter and the toasted coil is the payout counter step-up coil, so ignore the previous post about odds relays.

questions:

1] were coins coming out when this happened?  If yes, was it a small pay or a large one?

2] did this happen with 1 coin played or more than 1?  If more than one, does it happen when 1 coin is played?

as long as the switches in the stack on top of the hopper aren't getting stuck closed due to a hopper jam or whatever, you shouldn't have the 25-gg-7 powered continuously.  If you do, there's a short someplace.

it's possible that coil wasn't the one making smoke.  A large payout will heat the coil somewhat and over time the paper will char.   Did you open the door when the problem happened as see where the smoke/buzz was coming from?

tmi
----
what's supposed to happen is:

1] spin the reels and get a winner

2] circuit completes thru the reel wiper boards and energized a trace on the payout counter disc

3] the wiper on that energized trace is connected to the payout relay coil, so the payout relay powers and turns on the hopper motor

4] as coins are ejected from the hopper, the switch stack on top of the hopper pulses closed and a couple of the redundant switches with the red/white and orange/white wires close and make a pulses headed toward the payout counter step-up coil.

5] if your payout odds are minimum (one coin played), then that pulse goes thru the odds disc directly to the payout counter step up coil.  The payout counter wipers should move one ratchet tooth.  If your odds are higher (2+ coins played) and the win is not a jackpot requiring hand pay, then the odds unit sends the pulse to one of the X2, X3, X4 or X5 units.  Those things let the pulse thru to the payout counter step-up coil at the rate implied by the unit name.

e.g. if you play max coins, then the payout counter is stepped up once for every 5 coins ejected.

6] the pay ends when the wiper on the payout disc steps off the end of the energized trace

most solenoid coils, and certainly high current ones like the payout counter step-up coil, shouldn't be held powered for long.  They should just be pulsed briefly.
