Burning Key Chip
« on: December 02, 2015, 04:23:15 PM »
In my journey to bringing my Iplus 3902 back to life I have run into endless roadblocks. My latest is trying to make a Key 22 (thanks Tilt). I have bought chips and have a GQ-4X USB burner I have used for a few years. When I placed an chip in and chose the type it says I need a 16 bit adapter which I don't have. Am I the only one that gets lost on this stuff? I have a 3902 board with a bubble in the U74 chip which is the root of my coin-in fault. Order a tested board off e-bay and when it arrived it had the U74 busted in half. They are replacing that, thank you.
I ordered a key chip from ebay for my machine and they sent a 28 which I understand is wrong. Causes my machine to show a screwed up bunch of color dots on the screen on both boards when used.

Questions..........

How do you guys make the keys?
Anyone every replaced the U74's (20 pin SMD)? I ordered 10 from China for 10 bucks. Nothing to lose here.
I have 36 years as a electronic tech for the railroad so soldering is not a stranger although not on surface mount chips.
Thanks

I don't have a GQ-4, so I don't know the specifics of that programmer.  The keychip is a 16 bit device (27C4002 or 27C4096 most common) and requires a programmer capable of programming them.  It sounds like yours needs an 16bit adapter that typically plugs into your existing programmer's ZIF socket.  Someone who has one will probably chime in with details on that.

Key 28 is for use on 044 MPUs with 044 flash cards.  It will not work on 3902 boards as you found out.

As far as replacing U74 goes, I've replaced several.  I use a SMD rework station (hot air) that I picked up on ebay a couple of years back for $100 or so.  Even with it it's a bit difficult to get at due to the PCB connector right next to it.  I use a thin piece of metal (aluminum foil may even work?) to act as a heat shield for the plastic connector.  Even with it it may melt a little or get slightly discolored.  As long as you don't turn it into a molten blob and the sound board will still plug into it you should be ok.

I use a low residue liquid flux pen on the solder pads and new component to help with the solder flow.  Generally there is still enough solder on the pad after removing the old device that you don't need to add anymore.  I use a pair of tweezers to place the component on the pads, and then heat it with the hot air nozzle to reflow the solder.  The hardest part is holding the new component steady enough to get it evenly (square) on all the pads.  If you have another old junk or parts board practice removing and replacing a few SMD components on it first until you're comfortable enough to try it on the "good" board.  Good lighting and magnification help tremendously too.

If you are able to successfully replace U74, doing the board EEPROM mod will really simple after that.

Good luck, hope you are able to get it fixed.

You need these to program the Key chips and the base chips for the i960 IGT games.

Really?

I have burned Key 17 and 22 with my GQ-4X USB burner without that adapter and successfully used those chips in my IGT 3902 and S2000 games.

According to the manufacturers website the GQ-4X requires the 16 bit adapter (ADP-054) to program the 27c4002 and 27c4096.

Here is the device list for the GQ-4X:

We have one for a backup and it has to have the adapter too.

I just grabbed the current Key 22 I burned and verified that it is a 27C4002 chip.  I burned it without the adapter.  Do you get an error when you try to burn it or does the chip just not work?

I apologize.  I thought I had a GQ-4X, but I was wrong.  I have a EasyPRO 90B.  They look very similar.  My fault!

They are similar looking.

I've considered getting an EasyPro, what do you think about yours as far as ease of use, reliable programming, software updates from the manufacturer, number of chips it is compatible with? Did you compare it to the GQ-4X before buying the EasyPro? Thanks!

I have the GQ-4X, with all the adapters. For me it works great and so easy to use. An e prom eraser is also a great idea.
If it ain't broke.....Stop trying to fix it.
